COACH'S QUOTE
"Today was a high-energy hard-fought game by both teams," head coach
Kristi Huizenga said. "Unfortunately, we couldn't capitalize on any of our chances but we're happy to earn a shutout on the road. We got some great minutes from several players to help secure that including some great saves from
Kacey Lambertson."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Catamounts were on the attack in the 12th minute when Natalie Durieux lofted a cross from the goal line towards the far post for Frances O'Donnell, but the freshman's header missed wide left.
- In the 36th minute, Lambertson came through with a clutch save. Lexi Ansaldi dribbled in from the left side and rifled a line drive but the junior netminder punched the shot away.
- Early in the second half, Lambertson preserved the scoreless tie once again. Off a corner kick, Samantha Peters toed a low shot through traffic but Lambertson corralled the ball to keep the Crusaders off the board.
- In the 55th minute, Vermont drew a foul on the edge of the 18-yard box. On the ensuing free kick, Ella Bankert tried to place the potential game-winner under the crossbar but Holy Cross goalie Sophie Lettieri (3 saves) leaped and pushed the ball over the bar.
- Late in the second half, the Cats escaped a dangerous threat from the Crusaders. Lexi Ansaldi received a cross in the middle of the box but missed a chip shot from 10 yards out.
- In the first overtime, Lambertson made two more key saves. In the 94th minute, Bridgette Dwyer hooked a ball towards the top right corner of the net but Lambertson knocked the ball away with a full-extension dive. One minute later, Holy Cross' Jenna Barnes was on a breakaway but Lambertson came out of the net and pounced on the ball to win the one-on-one opportunity.
GAME NOTES
- Lamberton finished the contest with a season-high seven saves. She also registered her fifth career clean sheet and moved into an 11th-place tie on Vermont's career shutouts list.
- Karen Wallace guided the team with four shots. Bankert and O'Donnell followed with two shots apiece.
