Women’s Basketball Set to Face Seawolves in America East Quarterfinals

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK
The six-seed Vermont Catamounts (11-17, 7-9) return to Long Island Wednesday to face the three-seed Stony Brook Seawolves (22-7, 11-5) in the America East Quarterfinals. The matchup is set for 7 p.m. and will be available on ESPN+, the exclusive home of the men's and women's America East quarterfinals and semifinals. Fans can access ESPN+ with a seven-day free trial, followed by a subscription fee of $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year, with the ability to cancel at any time. The game will also be available on AM-620 WVMT with Maura Sheridan on the call.

WRIGHT STUFF AGAINST STONY BROOK
Senior forward Candice Wright has played some of the best basketball of her career against Stony Brook this season. On Saturday at Island Federal Arena she posted her second straight double-double with a career-high 22 points, 10 rebounds and a career-best four made three-pointers. Against the Seawolves this season she is averaging 20.5 points and nine rebounds per game.
 
FIRST YEAR SUCCESS WITH COACH KRESGE
The Catamounts are in the midst of their first 11-win season & first with seven conference wins since the 09-10 campaign. With 11 wins Coach Kresge is enjoying the best debut season for a new head coach at UVM since Sharon Dawley won 14 in 2003-04.
 
CRYMBLE LEADING THE WAY
Junior forward Hanna Crymble leads the Catamounts in scoring with 13.8 PPG. She is sixth in America East in scoring. She has been Vermont's leading scorer in 16 of the Catamounts 28 games. She is shooting 48.1% from the field this season which is the second-best mark in America East. She is also shooting 87.4% from the free throw line, which is the best mark in the league. Her percentage from the charity stripe is tied for the 23rd best mark in Division I.
 
WRIGHT BLOCK PARTY
Candice Wright is Vermont's all-time block leader with 222 career blocks. She has 81 blocks this season which is tied for the fourth most in the NCAA. She is averaging 2.89 blocks per game, twice this season she has had eight blocks in a single game. By herself this season Candice has more blocks than four America East teams. With 222 career blocks Wright is third all-time in America East history.
 
SCOUTING STONY BROOK
The Seawolves are in the midst of their third 20-win campaign in their Division I history and first since 2013-14. Stony Brook has won eight of their last ten games, dropping contests only to Maine and Hartford who top the America East standings.

Senior guard Shania Johnson leads the Seawolves averaging 16.8 points, 7.4 assists and 3.3 three-point field goals per game. In the Seawolves 58-48 win over Vermont Saturday she had 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. She didn't play in the teams' first meeting at Patrick Gym in January.
 
The Seawolves are an impressive 12-3 at home this season, including a perfect 7-0 mark in non-conference action. In the Seawolves 12 home wins their average margin of victory is 19.0 points per game.  
 
SERIES HISTORY
The Catamounts lead the all-time series 19-18 against the Seawolves, although Stony Brook has won the last four meetings in the series. Vermont is 4-6 in its last ten games at Stony Brook. Wednesday will be just the second time the teams have met in postseason play. The Seawolves defeated Vermont 59-52 in the 2006 America East Quarterfinals in West Hartford, Conn.
 
AMERICA EAST TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Vermont is 35-23 all-time in the America East tournament. They have advanced to 19 semifinals, 11 America East title games, and won the championship six times. The Catamounts last title came in 2010 in a 55-50 win over Hartford. Vermont's last win in the America East tournament was March 8, 2013 in a 47-43 decision over UMBC.
 
Vermont is 1-3 all-time as the six-seed in the America East tournament, with their lone win coming against UMBC in 2013.
 
Given the new format of the 2019 America East Tournament Wednesday will be Vermont's first true road contest in the tournament since defeating Hartford on the road in the 2010 title game. All-time Vermont is 2-5 in the America East tournament in a road game.
