Cats’ Late Rally Falls Short Against UMBC

FINAL SCORE: UMBC 14, Vermont 13
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont nearly erased a three-goal deficit in the late stages of the game but dropped its America East home opener to UMBC 14-13 on Saturday afternoon. The setback snaps Vermont's five-game winning streak, who fall to 7-2 on the year and 1-1 in the league standings. The Retrievers improve to 3-9 and 1-2 in conference play.

COACH'S QUOTE
"Today was exactly what you want to see in a conference game, but unfortunately we didn't get the result we wanted," head coach Sarah Dalton said. "We need to do a better job of valuing possession of the ball. We will take a look at the film, learn from today's game, and I expect our girls to get better."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jenna Janes netted the first goal of the afternoon in the first minute but UMBC struck for two goals in the next two minutes.
  • The Catamounts countered with three goals in a four-minute stretch as Janes, Elise Koehl, and Maris Large all found the back of the net.
  • The Retrievers even the score at 4-4 near the midway point of the half, but Koehl broke the tie at the 7:17 mark. UMBC took a 7-5 lead into the break after Zoe Perkins (4 goals) registered a solo hat trick in the last 4:22, including one with two seconds left on the clock.
  • UVM started the second half on fire and tied the game at 7-7 only two minutes into the half when Janes and Koehl assisted each other's goals.
  • Later in in the period, the Retrievers built an 11-8 but the Cats came roaring back once again. The scoring tandem of Dani Paterno, Koehl, and Grace Giancola helped the Green and Gold knot the score at 11-11 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
  • UMBC took advantage of penalty opportunities and jumped out to a 14-11 lead thanks to a pair of woman-up goals.
  • The Catamounts buried two free positions goals and drew within 14-13 in the final minutes. Janes buried her free position attempt at the 3:43, then Taylor Mullen tucked a line drive inside of the right post with 40 seconds left in the game. On the ensuing draw control, UMBC came away with the ball and stole the win after running out the clock.
GAME NOTES
  • Janes guided the team with six points on four goals and two assists.
  • Koehl matched Janes with four goals and handed out one assist. With an assist early in the second half, the senior became the 18th Catamount to record over 100 career points.
  • Mullen added two points with her free position goal and one assist.
  • Maddy Kuras made eight saves and picked up four ground balls.
  • UVM's five-game winning streak was tied for the second-longest in program history. The 7-2 record is also the best nine-game start since 2014.
