ONTO THE SECOND ROUND
Tuesday night will mark the 10th consecutive season that UVM has appeared in the America East Semifinals – the longest streak in the conference's history. Stony Brook's chance to match UVM came to an end at the hands of Binghamton on Saturday night.
Â
BEST 31-GAME STARTS
After 31 games, the Catamounts are off to a 25-6 start or better for the third straight season under Cioffi Men's Basketball Head Coach
John Becker and the fourth time in school history. In the previous three starts, Vermont has qualified for either the NCAA Tournament (2016-17) or the NIT (2017- 18 and 2006-07).
Â
EMPIRE STATE OF MIND
Since the start of the 2016-17 season, Vermont is 25-1 against schools located in New York. The run includes non-conference victories over Marist, Hofstra, Siena, and St. Bonaventure while topping league rivals UAlbany, Binghamton, and Stony Brook.
Â
ALL-TIME TOURNAMENT WINS
With Saturday's quarterfinal win over Maine, Becker moved into sole possession of fourth place on the league's list of most conference tournament wins. In eight years, Becker has accrued 15 tournament wins and stands one victory away from tying former Boston U coach Dennis Wolff for third on the all-time list.
Â
SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
The Bearcats were the Cinderella team of the opening round after pulling off a 78-72 upset at No. 2 seed Stony Brook on Saturday. Binghamton currently paces the league with 148 blocks – 14 more than Stony Brook in second place. BU is also one of the top long-distance shooting teams in the conference and ranks second with a 34.8% team three-point percentage. Sam Sessoms, this year's America East Rookie of the Year, has averaged 20.0 points 4.2 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in his last four outings. The freshman notched a team-high 26 points in the upset on Long Island. J.C. Show has been a force as well with an 18.8 scoring average over a six-game span. The 6-3 guard has been lethal from long distance with a 60.8% (31-for-51) three-point percentage in the six games.
Â
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Catamounts have won the last eight meetings and hold a 32-8 all-time edge over the Bearcats. Vermont has beat Binghamton in all four previous conference tournament matchups – 2011 (Quarterfinals - W, 57-46), 2008 (Quarterfinals - W, 65-57), 2006 (Semifinals - W, 66-59), and 2005 (Semifinals – W, 76-65). During the regular season, the Green and Gold cruised to a 78-50 win in Burlington on Jan. 19, then survived a 69-63 scare in Vestal, New York on Feb. 23.Â
