CATS OPEN HOME SLATE WITH A WIN
Vermont's home opener was a back-and-forth battle with the Bryant Bulldogs. The Catamounts took a lead halfway through the first quarter, but surrendered that lead at the end of the third. Junior guard
Josie Larkins then scored the first 13 points of the fourth quarter for the Catamounts and Vermont held on to win 71-66. Senior
Hanna Crymble picked up her first double-double of the season and set a career high with four blocked shots. Sunday was the second time this season Vermont shot better than 50% from downtown, connecting with 52.4% of their tries.
LIGHTS OUT LARKINS
Josie Larkins was named America East Player of the Week and TD Bank Student-Athlete of the Week after her career performance on Sunday against Bryant. She set a new career-high with 29 points, and matched a program record with eight three-pointers for Vermont. With the Catamounts trailing the Bulldogs by two entering the fourth quarter she scored 13 straight points.
JAUNICH COMES HOME
Friday's game is a homecoming for Navy senior Laurel Jaunich, a Charlotte, Vermont native and graduate of Champlain Valley Union High School. She helped CVU clinch four state titles, each in perfect seasons. Her team set a state record with 95 consecutive wins, and Jaunich won the Burlington Free Press' Miss Basketball honor.
SCOUTING NAVY
The Midshipmen visit Patrick Gymnasium with a 2-1 record and two ACC opponents under their belts. Navy began the season 2-0, and found the program's first ever ACC victory, a 65-52 win at Clemson. Last Monday they fell to North Carolina 80-40, and will have gone 11 days without a game when they tip off against Vermont.
With only one senior graduating last year, the Mids' have 12 returners, including backcourt duo Jennifer Coleman and Kolbi Green. Coleman led the team in scoring last year and is averaging a team-high 14.0 points-per-game to start the season. Green knocked down a team-high 47 three-pointers a year ago, and is pacing the team from beyond the arc again.
