Larkins Career-High Leads UVM to Third Straight Conference Win

FINAL SCORE: Vermont 58, UMBC 44
CATONSVILLE, Md. – Josie Larkins scored a career-high 23 points, including seven made three-pointers to lead Vermont to its third consecutive conference win 58-44 over UMBC Wednesday afternoon at the UMBC Event Center. The Catamounts three-game conference win streak is its longest since 2010. With the win Vermont improved to 4-3 in conference play while UMBC fell to 0-6.

"Really proud of the team and how they handled this extended business trip," said head coach Alisa Kresge. "They stayed focused and took care of business! I'm very pleased with how we took care of the ball as well as shared it. It's also great to see us hitting perimeter shots. We are excited to get home."
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vermont came out firing in the first quarter, Larkins hit two shots from behind the arc while Rose Caverly and Courtney Wright added two more three-pointers to give the Catamounts a 12-3 lead 3:33 into the game.
  • Lauren Handy hit another three-pointer to make it a 12-0 run for Vermont over 3:45 to give the Catamounts a 15-3 advantage. The Retrievers closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to make it a seven-point Catamount edge entering the second frame.
  • UMBC scored the first four points of the second quarter to cut the deficit to three. Shortly after UMBC cut the lead to three Larkins hit her third three of the day to push the advantage back to six. Larkins hit two more threes at the end of the half, including a step-back jumper at the buzzer to give UVM at 30-18 edge heading to the locker room.
  • Larkins had five more points including another triple in the third quarter as the Catamounts held off UMBC's efforts to comeback in the game. Vermont took a 41-32 edge into the final frame.
  • Hanna Crymble and Candice Wright each had five points in the fourth quarter as Vermont put UMBC away to earn its fourth conference win of the season. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Vermont shot 50% from three in the first half making 8 of their 16 attempts.
  • The Catamounts never trailed in the contest and had the lead for 38:35.
  • With the win Vermont has back-to-back road wins for the first time since 2010. It's also the Catamounts first three-game win streak since 2015. 
WHO'S NEXT
After six days on the road Vermont returns home this weekend to host Stony Brook for its annual Rally Against Cancer game, presented by Inspired Closets. Vermont will be wearing special edition lavender jerseys this year, the color the represents the fight against all cancers. Jerseys will be auctioned off following the game, with proceeds going to the UVM Cancer Center. Fans who donate $5 or more to the UVM Cancer Center at the door will receive a free ticket to the game.
 
Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3. Fans can watch the matchup on ESPN3 and the watchESPN app by logging in with their television provider. Fans can also listen to the contest on AM-620 WVMT with Maura Sheridan on the call.
