Game Notes: Vermont
MOST WINS IN NEW ENGLAND
UVM leads all Division I New England programs with 56 wins over the last two seasons. Rhode Island follows in a close second with 51 victories and Providence sits third with 41 wins.
CATS IN REGULAR SEASON OPENERS
Vermont will try to win the regular season opener for the second time in the last three years. Despite pushing No. 4 Kentucky to the brink of an upset last season (L, 73-69), UVM crushed Quinnipiac 94-70 in the 2016-17 opener behind a game-high 23 points from
Anthony Lamb. Friday's tilt will be the first season-opening matchup against a New England opponent for the Cats since the 2005-06 opener versus Harvard.
RELIVING THE 2010 AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME | CatamounTV Highlights
Behind a monster performance from the Reggie Lewis Most Outstanding Player Marqus Blakely, Vermont topped Boston University 83-70 in front of a sold-out Patrick Gym to win the 2010 America East Championship. Blakely led the Catamounts with 24 points, 18 rebounds and five assists, as UVM shot 57.8 percent from the floor. Nick Vier went a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor, all three-pointers, to add 15 points, while Maurice Joseph went a perfect 8-for-8 from the line to finish with 13 points.
SCOUTING BOSTON UNIVERSITY
The Terriers already have one game under their belt with a 77-74 comeback victory at Northeastern on Tuesday night. Coming into the season, Boston University was picked to finish fourth in this year's Patriot League Preseason Coaches' Poll and received two first-place votes. Last year, BU finished 15-16 overall and 10-8 in conference play, then knocked off Lehigh 88-82 in the Patriot League Quarterfinals before falling to eventual league champion Bucknell 90-59 in the semifinal round. BU returns four starters, including 2018 Patriot League All-Conference Third Team selection Max Mahoney. He led the team with 12.9 points per game last year and pulled down 4.8 rebounds per game. Tyler Scanlon averaged double figures a year ago with 10.5 points and a team-best 5.5 rebounds. On Tuesday, Scanlon notched a team-high 16 points and eight boards.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Cats and Terriers will revisit the all-time series during the regular season for the first time since 2013 after BU switched from the America East Conference to the Patriot League. Vermont trails 44-55 in the series but has reached the win column in 11 out of the last 16 meetings. Last year, the two programs met in the preseason for a hurricane relief game with the Catamounts coming out on top 87-66 in Burlington.
