SCOUTING UMBC
Head coach Phil Stern enters his 16th season at the helm of the Retrievers and has guided the program since its move to the America East Conference in 2003-04.
Last season, UMBC went 15-16 overall and 10-6 in conference play. In the America East Tournament, the Retrievers were upset by sixth-seeded Hartford 74-70 in the quarterfinal round.Â
This season, UMBC stands at 1-13 overall and finished non-conference play at 1-12. UMBC dropped its America East opener on the road to New Hampshire 56-51 on Wednesday night. Laura Castaldo led the way with 13 points. Castaldo is the only Retriever averaging double figures this season (13.0 ppg). Janee'a Summers follows with 8.3 points per game. UMBC's roster contains five seniors, four sophomores and five freshmen.
Â
INSIDE THE SERIES
UMBC leads the all-time series 17-14 after reaching the win column in the last eight meetings. The Catamounts' longest winning streak in the series stands at six games, as UVM grabbed consecutive victories from 2008-10. Niki Taylor and then-freshmanÂ
Kristina White combined to score UVM's final 14 points en route to the squad's most recent victory over the Retrievers, a 63-59 result in Burlington on Jan. 18, 2014. Last year, the Cats suffered a tough 69-66 overtime loss at UMBC and fell 65-52 in Burlington. White led the way for UVM with 18 points in Baltimore.Â
Â
HISTORY BEFORE OUR EYES
Wright's five blocked shots against Rider on Friday, Dec. 1 placed her in sole possession for first all-time on Vermont's career blocks list. The junior broke Katie McNamara's '05 record of 102 blocked shots on her first rejection of the contest. Wright has 123 blocked shots during her career through the victory over UMass Lowell.
  Â
DIALING FROM LONG DISTANCE
With her three-pointer against UMass Lowell, Smith sits fifth all-time with 168 career makes from long distance. She is two triples shy of tying Kayla Burchill '15 for fourth all-time.
Â
Additionally, White is now seventh all-time in program history in three-pointers after passing UVM Hall of Famer Morgan Hall '03. White has made 132 triples during her time in Burlington.Â
Â
As a team, Vermont is averaging just over seven three-pointers per game. Out of UVM's 806 field goal attempts through 14 games, nearly 45% have come from behind the three-point arc. Individually, the most proficient three-point shooting Catamounts have been Crymble (40.0%),
Cassidy Derda (32.5%) and
Josie Larkins (30.0%).
