LAST TIME OUT | Dartmouth Highlights
The Catamounts used a pair of 20-point performances from
Trae Bell-Haynes and
Payton Henson for a 91-78 win at Dartmouth on Wednesday night in the non-conference finale. UVM recorded its 10th straight victory over its twin state rival. Bell-Haynes finished one point shy of his career high with a game-high 27 points and the senior was a perfect 10-for-10 from the floor. He tallied five rebounds and dished out three assists. Henson followed with 20 points, four boards, and made two triples.
Cam Ward racked up a season high 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting and handed out five assists.
IN GOOD COMPANY
Vermont's 12 wins are tied with Rhode Island for the most victories by a New England program this season.
STREAKY CLEAN
UVM will try to extend a pair of winning streaks on Saturday. The Cats own the longest regular season conference winning streak in the history of America East at 23 games. The Green and Gold also own a 17-game home winning streak dating back to last season.
SCOUTING STONY BROOK
The Seawolves were tabbed fourth in this year's America East Preseason Coaches' Poll. The group from Long Island is off to a 2-1 start in conference play thanks to a pair of last-second three-pointers. Stony Brook has also recorded the 23rd-most steals (140) in Division I and ranks 32nd in the country in forced turnovers (276). Akwasi Yeboah has been on a tear of late as the senior has averaged 17.8 points per game over the last five games and has shot 41.7% from long range. Classmate Tyrell Sturdevant has posted double digits in each league contest. The Chester, Pennsylvania native provided the game-winning heroics at Hartford after draining one from long range in the final seconds.
SCOUTING MAINE
The Black Bears have been one of the early surprises in the America East season. After getting picked to finish ninth in the preseason poll, Maine nearly pulled off an upset at Stony Brook but was the victim of a game-winning three pointer and lost 71-70. The Black Bears rebounded for a 76-73 win at Binghamton last Saturday but suffered another tough defeat to UMBC 72-67 on Wednesday. In league play, Aaron Calixte ranks third in the conference with a 21.0 scoring average. Calixte is coming off back-to-back 20-point efforts and shared Co-Player of the Week honors with
Ernie Duncan. Isaiah White racked up 15 points and five rebounds against Stony Brook and nearly recorded a double-double against UMBC with eight points and nine boards.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Catamounts lead the all-time series with the Seawolves 26-11. Vermont has won three out of the last four meetings, but the lone loss was the 2016 America East Championship Game. Last year, Bell-Haynes became the 36th member of the 1,000-career point club in a 71-64 win on Long Island. One month later, UVM capped off the regular season with a 66-51 victory over Stony Brook at Patrick Gym and completed the first ever 16-0 undefeated conference season.
The Green and Gold have won 11 straight over the Black Bears in an effort to even up the head-to-head record. Maine holds a close 70-67 mark over UVM, but the Black Bears have not won in Catamount Country since Jan. 18, 2011. Last year, the Cats swept the season series and cruised past the eighth-seeded Black Bears 86-41 in the America East Quarterfinals.
