Wednesday's result gives UVM an even split of the regular season series with the Black Bears after earning a victory in the conference opener at Patrick Gymnasium on January 4.
While UVM recorded the first four points of the game courtesy of
Candice Wright, the Black Bears countered with a 11-4 run to close the quarter, largely in part supported by Sigi Koizar and Sutton.
As the second quarter began it appeared the Green and Gold were on the verge of regaining the lead, getting back within two after Crymble converted a 3-point play with just over eight minutes left in the half. But Maine responded, building its advantage back up to nine heading into the break after Maddy McVicar completed an and-1 sequence in the final minute.
The Black Bears forced seven Catamount turnovers in the first 20 minutes and turned that into 10 points, ultimately holding a 32-23 lead at the break.
Maine used hot shooting to swell its lead to as much a 19 in the third period. Helped by six downtown points from Koizar, the Black Bears staged a 9-2 run coming out of the break. However, UVM managed to battle back and narrow the deficit to less than 10 multiple times. That sequence was highlighted by a 3-point play converted by
Kylie Butler with 4:40 on the clock. The senior intercepted a Maine pass, then ran the floor, upfaked and proceeded to drain her layup while being fouled.
As the fourth quarter progressed the Catamounts continued to fight valiantly, but were unable to stop Koizar and Sole.
Maine finished the night shooting 20-for-61 from the field (32.8 percent), while the Catamounts were held to 25.9 percent on 15-for-58 shooting. UVM did hold the edge in the paint, outscoring its opponent by a 22-18 margin.
Wright registered a block in the first quarter and needs two more to enter a tie for eighth in program history with former Catamount Morgan Hall (1999-2003), who tallied 83 blocks during her time in Burlington.
UVM hosts Hartford on Saturday (Feb. 4) in its annual Rally Against Cancer Game presented by Otter Creek Awnings and Vermont Custom Closets. That game also represents the Catamounts' annual Pack The House game. For more information on Pack The House as well as the Rally Against Cancer series,
