The Catamounts had a strong scoring chance near the midway point of the first half.
Colby Snyder marched up the middle of the field and dished a pass to her left for
Sarah Martin, who dialed a shot from 20 yards out but UMBC goalie Leah Roth (6 saves) deflected the shot away for the save. On the ensuing corner kick, Martin sent a ball into the box where
Christina Barry put a ball on frame but Roth made another stop to preserve the scoreless tie.
The Retrievers found the back of the net in the 33rd minute for the lone goal of the evening. Nikki Saad entered the box from the left side and lined a shot at UVM keeper
Coco Speckmaier (2 saves), but the senior netminder slapped the ball away for the save. Jessica Hopkins gathered the rebound and tapped in the rebound from three yards out.
Five minutes into the second half, UVM turned up the pressure when
Aly Spencer came within inches of tying the game. Spencer received a feed at the top of the box and lofted a shot towards the top right corner of the net, but the attempt flew too high of the crossbar.
In the final minute, the Cats worked quickly on their offensive side of the field in hopes of finding the late equalizer. Barry took a shot from the edge of the box, but the ball sailed wide of the right goalpost.
