GAMEDAY PROMOTIONS
America East You Can Play Day: Join UVM Athletics and the America East Conference in the effort to promote equality, respect, and safety for all without regard to sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. There will be a brief halftime program highlighting the efforts occurring here at UVM to achieve the above.
CATAMOUNTS RECAP
A total of seven different Catamounts inked the scorebook but an early 15-0 run ultimately put Albany ahead for good as Vermont fell by a 64-53 score on Thursday afternoon at SEFCU Arena.
Kristina White paced Vermont with 14 points in the game, while
Sydney Smith had 11 points and nine rebounds
Hanna Crymble drained 13 points of her own.
UVM clawed its way back from a 16-point second quarter deficit to narrow Albany's lead to only four in the third quarter. Smith,
Candice Wright and White (2) each buried from behind the arc, while six defensive rebounds and five Albany turnovers helped bring the Catamounts closer. However, UVM had challenges containing Imani Tate, who had 14 points in the period despite the Catamounts' best efforts.
SCOUTING STONY BROOK
Stony Brook (9-11, 2-5 AE), which is in a tie for seventh in the conference, is coming off a 67-61 setback to UMBC on Wednesday (Jan. 25). The Seawolves eliminated a 17-point lead held by UMBC in the first half after stringing together a 15-0 run in the third period. The back-and-forth game finally saw UMBC seal the win in the final two and a half minutes. Four Seawolves, including senior Christa Scognamiglio (17 pts), finished in double figure scoring.
As with Albany, UVM's most recent opponent, the Seawolves bring an interesting statistical matchup to the table. Despite sitting in the lower third of America East in scoring offense (57.2 ppg), the team trails only New Hampshire in scoring defense, allowing 57.8 points per game. Both Kori Bayne-Walker and Davion Wingate average just over 11 points on a nightly basis, while the former dishes out around 4.6 assists.
Caroline McCombs is in her third season on Long Island after stints as an assistant at Auburn (2012-14), Northwestern (2010-12), Pittsburgh (2005-10) and Valparaiso (1999-2005).
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Green and Gold hold the upper hand over Stony Brook by a 17-14 margin, which includes victories in the series' first five games as well as eight straight from 2008-11. Last season, the teams split the regular season series with the Catamounts emerging on top in the finale. In part supported by 10 points along with a pair of blocks by
Lauren Handy, combined with nine points and 10 boards from
Hayley Robertson, UVM shut down the Seawolves in the fourth quarter to preserve a 44-37 Senior Day victory at Patrick Gymnasium.
CRYMBLE SNAGS AMERICA EAST WEEKLY HONOR
Following her 60 percent shooting performance last week, freshman
Hanna Crymble was named America East Rookie of the Week this past Monday (Jan. 23).
She averaged 19.5 points last week as Vermont fell just short in a comeback effort against New Hampshire (Jan. 16) before registering 10 rebounds and a career-high 24 points in a win at UMass Lowell on Thursday. Crymble drilled 10 of her points on the night during a 19-0 third quarter run by the Catamounts.
CATS CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOK
As a junior,
Sydney Smith has etched her name in the record book by virtue of sinking 150 career 3-point field goals. She entered the season 10th all-time with a total of 122 between her freshman and sophomore campaigns in Burlington and now sits fifth in the category. In her 15 games this season, she has eclipsed Kayla Burchill (2011-15), Christie Lauzon (1995-2000), Morgan Hall (1999-03), Dawn Cressman (1999-03) and Ashleigh Cuncic (2002-07) en route to her current standing.
ALL THE 'WRIGHT' REASONS
Sophomore
Candice Wright also continues to leave a mark in the record book, registering 77 blocks in less than two seasons and sitting 10th all-time in that category. As a freshman last year, Wright logged 50 blocks, setting a single-season program record. She holds the distinction of being the fastest Catamount in program history to reach 70, needing just 42 games to eclipse the mark.
GOOD THINGS COME IN THREE'S
In Vermont's January 4 win over Maine, UVM allowed just three second quarter points, representing a tie for the fewest allowed by the squad in a single 10-minute period. In a Feb. 28, 2016 victory over Stony Brook, UVM surrendered just three points in the fourth quarter in preserving a 44-37 victory over the Seawolves at Patrick Gymnasium.
WELCOME TO VERMONT, COACH
A 1997 graduate of West Chester University in Pennsylvania, head coach
Chris Day arrives in Vermont following a three-year stint as an assistant at the University of Pennsylvania. During his time at Penn, the Quakers punched two tickets to the NCAA Tournament and captured two Ivy League titles. The squad amassed 67 wins during his tenure, including a remarkable 36-6 mark in conference action.
The eighth head coach in UVM history, Day also spent time in coaching capacities at Indiana (2012-13), Saint Joseph's (2005-12) and La Salle (2004-05). He served a three-year stint (2000-03) as head coach at Division III Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania, helping Widener make its first postseason appearance in 20 years.
NEXT UP
A road trip to Maine is ahead for UVM, who tips off against the Black Bears on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. That game will be played in Bangor, Maine at the Cross Insurance Center.
