CATAMOUNTS RECAP
Vermont is coming off of a runner-up performance at the TD Bank Classic following the Thanksgiving holiday. The Catamounts opened the tournament on Friday, seeing 12-point performances from
Hanna Crymble,
Lauren Handy and
Sydney Smith en route to a 64-42 win over NJIT. Vermont was also paced on the glass by
Kallie Banker and
Courtney Wright, both of whom grabbed six rebounds apiece.
UVM battled back from an early deficit in the tournament championship game against Milwaukee on Saturday but was unable to stop the high-powered Panthers offense. Eight different Catamounts recorded a point, while Crymble and Smith received All-Tournament Team nods following the game.
SCOUTING HOLY CROSS
The Crusaders sit at 1-5 on the young season, most recently taking Yale to overtime this past Sunday (Nov. 27) at home before falling 71-70. Five players scored in double figures for Holy Cross, but Lena Munzer buried a layup with 24 seconds to play in overtime to move the score in favor of Yale for the balance of the contest.
Offensively, the squad has been powered by junior Infiniti Thomas-Waheed, whose 16 points per game rank fourth in the Patriot League. The native of Newton, Massachusetts has been the Crusaders' leading scorer in five of six games this season in which the team has averaged 59 points per game. Opponents hold a slight advantage, tallying a mark of 64 points per game. Amy Hasenauer boasts a team-high 12 blocks which leads the Patriot League.
Veteran head coach Bill Gibbons is in his 32nd season on the Crusaders' bench and 36th associated with Holy Cross athletics. He has compiled over 580 wins in his time with the women's basketball program, having previously served as an assistant with the men's team.
In total, Holy Cross has three common opponents with the Catamounts, having also been dealt close setbacks against Dartmouth (53-49) and Bryant (76-74 in OT).
INSIDE THE SERIES
UVM holds the upper hand in the all-time series with the Crusaders, maintaining an 8-7 advantage dating back to 1982. Although Holy Cross edged the Catamounts last season down in Massachusetts, UVM has won the last five meetings within the confines of Patrick Gymnasium and won four consecutive games in the series from 2006-10.
Wednesday's game marks the Crusaders' first trip to Burlington since Dec. 6, 2008. Amy Rosenkrantz had 17 points that afternoon for UVM in a 71-53 topping of the visitors.
HERE'S THE POINT
After netting 12 points against NJIT on Friday night, freshman
Hanna Crymble proceeded to bury 11 more in the Catamounts' tilt against Milwaukee. It was the rookie's fourth consecutive game reaching double figures in scoring and fifth in Vermont's six matchups on the season. The four-game streak is the longest by a Catamount freshman since
Sydney Smith reached double figures in seven straight games from Nov. 25-Dec. 14, 2014.
Crymble's 10.7 points per game is a team-best and enters the week ranked second among all America East freshmen. She trails only Sierra Da Costa of Hartford (11.9 ppg).
TECHNICALLY SPEAKING...
Vermont's win over NJIT on Friday night moved the Catamounts to 2-0 all-time against the Highlanders. UVM's other victory in the series came last season, when a late rally gave the squad a 54-46 decision in Newark, New Jersey.
WELCOME TO VERMONT, COACH
A 1997 graduate of West Chester University, head coach
Chris Day arrives in Vermont following a three-year stint as an assistant at the University of Pennsylvania. During his time at Penn, the Quakers punched two tickets to the NCAA Tournament and captured two Ivy League titles. The squad amassed 67 wins during his tenure, including a remarkable 36-6 mark in conference action.
The eighth head coach in program history, Day also spent time in coaching capacities at Indiana (2012-13), Saint Joseph's (2005-12) and La Salle (2004-05). He served a three-year stint (2000-03) as head coach at Division III Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania, helping Widener make its first postseason appearance in 20 years.
NEXT UP
The Catamounts will fly to Philadelphia this weekend for a Sunday afternoon (Dec. 4) tilt at Temple in Philadelphia. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. at McGonigle Hall.
