MANHATTAN – Erica Modena's goal in the 40th minute held up as the Manhattan Jaspers posted a 1-0 victory over the visiting Vermont Catamounts in the women's soccer season opener for both teams on Friday night.

Modena nearly gave the Jaspers a lead midway through the first half. Her shot in the 20th minute hit the post and caromed into the arms of UVM goalkeeper

Modena netted her first goal of the season 20 minutes later. Teammate Colleen Kavanaugh sent a through pass to Modena from 45 yards out and Modena slipped a shot into the lower left corner to give Manhattan a 1-0 lead at the break.

Vermont's
Sydney Cammeyer tried to find the equalizer in the 63rd minute as Manhattan's Kristen Skonieczny had to make a pair of diving saves on consecutive shots. Sophomore
Sarah Martin also had a chance to tie the game up, but her shot in the 70th minute hit the post.

Ramos was credited with three saves in the Vermont net, while Skonieczny made six stops for Manhattan to pick up the shutout. The Catamounts held the advantage in shots, 18-13, and corners 9-5.
