#1 Boston College Overcomes 49 Litchfield Saves to Earn 2-0 Win

Final Score: #1 Boston College 2, Vermont 0 | Box Score | CatamounTV Highlights | Photo Gallery
BURLINGTON, Vt.
– Sophomore goaltender Madison Litchfield made a career-high 49 saves for Vermont but the undefeated Boston College Eagles held on late for a 2-0 win in Hockey East action from Gutterson Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles came out strong in the first period outshooting the Catamounts 17-1. Litchfield was outstanding early keeping the game scoreless through two Boston College power play opportunities. It was just the fifth time this season the Eagles were held scoreless in the opening period. Vermont also managed the feat in their road matchup at Boston College.

The Eagles were finally able to solve Litchfield midway through the second period on a broken play in front of the net. Haley Skarupa tried a cross-crease pass that was deflected in front right to Meghan Grieves. Grieves was able to find the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season before Litchfield could gather herself. Danielle Doherty also assisted on the Eagles even strength tally with 7:49 left in the second.

Vermont pushed late in the third period searching for an equalizer. Senior forward Brittany Zuback split a pair of Boston College defenders and skated in alone on Katie Burt but she couldn't convert a backhand finish. Burt made 12 saves in the final two periods to earn her 19th win of the season.

Kenzie Kent added an empty-net goal with 30 seconds left in regulation to close out the scoring. Alex Carpenter and Lexi Bender assisted on Kent's sixth goal of the season.

"This weekend was a building block for us," said head coach Jim Plumer. "For us to stick to our game plan and really be committed to team defense is something for us to be proud of and build on. Madison was really focused today and was outstanding in both the routine stops and spectacular ones. She really gave us a chance today."

The Catamounts are back in action next weekend as they continue Hockey East play and travel to face No. 6 Boston U in a two-game series. Vermont will face the Terriers at historic Walter Brown Arena with faceoff set for 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

NOTES: Bridget Baker won 10 of the 13 draws she took this afternoon … Brittany Zuback led all Vermont skaters with three shots on goal … Litchfield's 49 saves were the most by a Vermont goaltender since Roxanne Douville made 50 in the Catamounts triple overtime win over Maine in the Hockey East quarterfinals last year.
