CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Kate Leary scored two second period goals as the top ranked Boston College Eagles came from behind to defeat Vermont 4-2 in Hockey East action Sunday afternoon at Kelley Rink.
The Catamounts opened the scoring in their fifth consecutive game with a power play goal early in the second period.
Amanda Pelkey centered a pass to
Brittany Zuback who fired a high shot that BC goaltender Katie Burt got a piece of with her shoulder. The rebound landed in the crease behind Burt and Pelkey tapped it home for her fifth goal of the season at the 2:56 mark of the second frame.
Victoria Andreakos was credited with the secondary assist on what was only the third power play goal against BC had given up all season.
The Eagles answered back later in the second period. Kenzie Kent fed a pass to Leary as the Eagles entered the Vermont zone in transition and Leary beat a Vermont defender then made a move to get
Madison Litchfield to commit before stashing home her sixth goal of the season at the 6:01 mark.
Leary gave the Eagles their first lead of the afternoon four minutes later. Kaliya Johnson fired a puck on net that Litchfield stopped and then she robbed Leary on a cross-crease put back attempt. But Leary gathered her own rebound and put it home to make it 2-1. It was Leary's second consecutive multi-goal game after scoring twice at Northeastern on Saturday.
Andie Anastos gave the Eagles a two-goal lead with her fourth goal of the season with 1:42 left in the second period. Emily Field circled behind the Vermont net and centered a pass through traffic that Anastos tapped home on the far post.
The Eagles made it a three-goal cushion with 8:32 left in the third period. Seconds after successfully killing a Vermont power play opportunity Alex Carpenter and Haley Skarupa entered the Catamounts zone on a two-on-one. Skarupa fed a pass to Carpenter and she beat Litchfield with a backhand shot labeled for the top corner. It was Carpenter's Hockey East leading ninth goal of the season.
Vermont got one back with another power play goal, down three the Catamounts pulled Litchfield for an extra-attacker to make their power play a six-on-four advantage. From the point
Amanda Drobot passed over to Colang, who faked a shot and then passed down low to Zuback who put it in from a tight angle. Zuback's team-leading seventh goal of the season came with 6:07 left in regulation.
The Catamounts were not able to solve Burt again as she collected her ninth win of the season making 21 saves. Litchfield made 29 saves for Vermont as the Catamounts lost a second game in a row for the first time this season.
"Our focus and execution was much better today and I was proud of the way we played," said head coach
Jim Plumer. "Madison was heroic in net and our team battled for 60 minutes. I hope we can bring that to the rink every game from here on out."
The Catamounts continue their six-game road trip next weekend as they travel to face Syracuse in a two-game non-conference series. Vermont will face the Orange at 7 p.m. next Friday, before concluding the series at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
