Colang Hat Trick Crucial in 6-5 Overtime Win at Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y
. – Dayna Colang picked up her first career hat trick and Brittany Zuback scored 1:42 into overtime as Vermont outlasted Syracuse 6-5 in non-conference action Friday night at the Tennity Ice Pavilion.
 
The Orange opened the scoring four minutes into the first period. Syracuse's leading scorer Stephanie Grossi scored her third goal of the season as the Orange scored the opening goal for the first time in three games.  It was the first goal Vermont freshman Molly Depew has ever given up, after earning a shutout in her first career start.
 
Syracuse stretched its lead to three goals with two late tallies in the first period. Jessica Sibley scored an unassisted goal with 1:39 left in the opening frame. Then with 14 seconds left Melissa Piacentini scored the fourth power play goal against Vermont has given up all season.
 
The Orange outshot Vermont 11-4 in the first period and continued their momentum from a three-goal third period to defeat No. 7 Mercyhurst last weekend.
 
After the first period Vermont switched goaltenders with Madison Litchfield taking over. Depew made eight saves for the Catamounts in her second career start.
 
The Catamounts got on the board with a power play goal of their own 4:53 into the second period. Colang scored her fifth goal of the season with assists credited to Amanda Pelkey and Amanda Drobot to pull within two.
 
With 9:03 left in the second period Colang added another goal as the Catamounts continued their comeback attempt. Rachael Ade and Pelkey were credited with the assists.
 
With 1:47 left in the second Pelkey completed the Vermont comeback with her sixth goal of the season. Ade picked up another assist as Pelkey notched her second three-point game of the season.
 
The Orange regained the lead 1:09 into the third period with their second power play goal of the game. Sibley scored her second goal of the game with assists going to Kaillie Goodnough and Akane Hosoyamada. It was the Orange's first goal against Litchfied.
 
At the 6:31 mark of the third period Vermont equalized once again. Brittany Zuback's eighth goal of the season extended a three-game scoring streak for the senior. Her even strength goal was assisted by Taylor Willard and Bridget Baker.
 
The Catamounts took their first lead of the game three minutes later as Colang got on the board again to collect her first career hat trick. Pelkey assisted on Colang's go-ahead goal to give her four points on the night.

The Orange were able to tie the game at five with another power play goal with 7:46 left in regulation. Nicole Renault picked up her first power play goal of the season, with the assist going to Larissa Martyniuk as the back and forth affair continued.
 
Zuback put an end to the high-scoring affair with her team-leading ninth goal of the season 1:42 into the overtime session as the Catamounts defeated Syracuse for the first time in program history.
 
Litchfield made 20 saves for Vermont and collected her sixth win of the season. Jenn Gilligan made 21 saves for Syracuse.
 
"That was an incredibly gritty effort by our team tonight," said head coach Jim Plumer. "We overcame a lot tonight and our leaders really stepped up to keep us focused and positive. I'm really proud of our team."
 
Vermont and Syracuse are back in action tomorrow afternoon with opening faceoff set for 3 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
 
NOTES: Six goals was a new high for Vermont in the Coach Plumer era and the most the Catamounts have scored since defeating Union 7-2 on October 10,  2008 … Freshman defenseman Amanda Drobot now has an assist in four consecutive games … Amanda Pelkey has five points in two games since returning from the 2014 Four Nations Cup … The Catamounts set a new program record with their sixth non-conference win of the season.
