Women's Hockey Wins League Opener 6-0 Over UConn

Final Score: Vermont 6, UConn 0 | Photo Gallery | CatamounTV Highlights & Postgame
BURLINGTON, Vt
. – Six different Catamounts scored and Madison Litchfield made 19 saves as Vermont shutout its third straight opponent as they defeated Connecticut 6-0 Sunday afternoon in their Hockey East opener at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

Vermont opened the scoring 47 seconds into the second period. Brittany Zuback entered the UConn zone with a step on the defense. She fired a snapshot on net that UConn's Elaine Chuli stopped but Sarah Kelly was rewarded for driving to the crease and stashed the rebound home for her first goal of the season.

Dayna Colang added to the Catamounts lead at the 4:45 mark of the second period. In the attacking zone she stepped around a UConn defender with a nifty move, skated into the slot and fired a shot labeled for the top corner that beat Chuli to make it 2-0. Cassidy Campeau and Amanda Drobot picked up assists on Colang's fourth goal of the season.

Vermont poured it on in the third period. Klara Myren scored her first goal of the season 2:39 in. Casey Leveillee cycled the puck behind the net to Myren who stepped in front and beat Chuli with a quick backhand shot. Delia McNally picked up the secondary assist on Myren's first goal of the season.

At the 5:21 mark Taylor Willard scored her first collegiate goal to make it 4-0. Dayna Colang won a faceoff clean to Campeau who passed it to Willard at the point. Willard fired a wrist shot that found the back of the net through traffic.

Vermont added it's fifth goal with 8:51 left in the third period. Bella Webster hit Sarah Campbell with a pass through the neutral zone and Campbell skated into the slot and beat Chuli with a wrist shot using the UConn defender as a screen.

Under two minutes later Zuback closed out the scoring for the Catamounts on a two-on-one. Zuback attempted a cross-crease pass to Kelly but an UConn defender inadvertently deflected the puck in the net for Zuback's team leading fifth goal of the season. Gina Repaci earned an assist on the play with a breakout pass that led to the odd-man rush.

Litchfield earned her second consecutive shutout as Vermont and Connecticut played to their sixth straight game with a shutout for one team. Litchfield picked up her third career shutout, and second against the Huskies.

The Catamounts embark on a season long six-game road trip with a pair of Hockey East games next weekend. Vermont faces New Hampshire on Saturday before traveling to Chestnut Hill to face No. 3 Boston College on Sunday. Both games are slated for 2 p.m.

NOTES: Amanda Pelkey missed her first game of the season with the U.S. national team at the Four Nations Cup … Sophomore forward Casey Leveillee saw her first game action since suffering an injury in Vermont's season opener at North Dakota … Vermont's 6-2-1 start is the best in program history … It is the first time in program history Vermont has posted three consecutive shutouts … Every Catamount was on the ice for at least one Vermont goal … The Catamounts are 3-0-0 in Hockey East openers under Coach Plumer … Dating back to last season Vermont has won seven straight regular season league games, a program record.
