LOWELL, Mass. – The Vermont Catamounts and UMass Lowell River Hawks played to a scoreless draw on Wednesday night in America East men's soccer action.
Vermont moves to 6-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in America East. UMass Lowell stands at 4-8-1 and 1-1-1 in league play.
"Good things come out of every situation and tonight it was our defending," said Vermont head coach
Jesse Cormier. "We were organized. Conor made some nice plays and we had some key matchups that we played really well. The attacking side is where we walked away from the game not satisfied. I thought we had some opportunities, and I'm a little disappointed in our inability to finish them. But we did pick up a point on the road and now we turn our attention to prepare for a first-place Binghamton team."
After a scoreless first half, both teams traded scoring opportunities throughout the rest of the match.
With 30 minutes left to play in regulation
Brian Wright ran onto a pass from
Brad Cole by was stuffed by UML goalkeeper Austin Kroll.
Five minutes later, another one-on-one opportunity by Wright was broken up by UMass Lowell's Wuilito Ferandes at the last minute.
The River Hawks threatened in back-to-back chances in the 71st minute. Leland made a stop on a one-on-one drive by Bryan Amaris and a Catamount defender cleared a shot by Jay Marshand off the goal line.
In the first overtime, the River Hawks' best scoring opportunity came off a free kick, but Leland punched out a dangerous ball out of harms way.
In the second extra session the Catamounts hit the post but could not find the finishing touch on the rebound opportunity for their best scoring chance.
Leland made two saves to post his fourth shutout of the season and 17th of his career in the Vermont net. Kroll was credited with eight stops for the River Hawks.
