President Tom Sullivan appointed Jeff Schulman '89 as the University's next Director of Athletics on April 6, 2016 (
click here for full story). Schulman officially assumed the role upon the retirement of Dr. Robert Corran on July 1, 2016. He became the ninth Director of Athletics in the modern era of UVM Athletics and just the fourth since 1973.
The 2015-16 season marked Schulman's 12th year as the senior associate athletic director at Vermont. Schulman served as assistant director of athletics from 1993-2002 before being promoted to the senior associate role.
In previous current role, Schulman had primary responsibility for the department’s financial operations including budget development, management, and control as well as coordination and oversight of all capital projects. He also assisted in the department’s development efforts and was the sport supervisor for the field hockey and women’s hockey programs.
During Schulman's tenure, UVM Athletics has seen a complete transformation of the Archie Post Athletic Complex with the construction of Moulton Winder Field (2005), the Frank H. Livak Track & Field Facility (2011), and Virtue Field (2012). Lights were installed at Virtue Field in the fall of 2015 for night competition, and construction on Phase II of the Virtue Field project was completed during the summer of 2016 to add permanent seating for 2,500 spectators, a press box, and storage space.
Schulman, a 1989 Vermont graduate, was a four-year letter-winning defenseman on the men’s hockey team. He assisted on one of the most famous Vermont hockey goals ever when the Catamounts defeated eventual national champion Harvard in the ECAC Semifinals at the Boston Garden in 1989. Following the season, Schulman was chosen by the Boston Bruins in the 1989 NHL supplemental draft.
After graduation, Schulman was selected for the prestigious Asa Bushnell Internship with the ECAC office in Centerville, Mass. During his one-year internship with the ECAC he assisted in event management and publicity for the conference.
Following the ECAC, Schulman was an assistant athletic director at Bates College from 1990-1993 prior to being hired at Vermont.
Schulman recently completed a four-year term on the NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Committee and was chair of that committee during his final two years. Previously, Schulman served a five-year term on the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Committee and has chaired and participated on several America East and ECAC committees in a variety of sports.
In September of 2000, Schulman was named Josten’s/ECAC Administrator of the Year. He has also been honored by the New England Women’s Soccer Association and the Northeast Gymnastics Coaches Association as their administrator of the year.
Schulman has been active in international athletic competitions. He was selected to work at both the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Summer Olympic Games. In the summer of 2009, Schulman was selected to serve as the overall team manager of the United States delegation for the 18th Maccabiah Games in Israel. As the leader of the 1,200 person U.S. delegation, Schulman coordinated all Team U.S.A. activities in Israel.
In 1997, Schulman competed in the Maccabiah Games as a member of the U.S. Ice Hockey team. He has also served as the delegation head at three Pan-American Maccabi Games – 2011 in Sao Paulo, Brazil; 2007 in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and 2003 in Santiago, Chile.
Schulman is an active advocate in the local community, serving as a member of the Burlington Airport Commission and on the Board of Directors of the Burlington Business Association.

A native of Buffalo, New York, Schulman lives in Burlington with his wife Deb Lichtenfeld '95, who works for the UVM Foundation as the Director of Development for UVM Hillel, and their three children: Theodore, Gabriella and Mara.
