BURLINGTON, Vt. – Top-seeded Vermont, season came to an end Friday afternoon with a double-overtime loss to No. 2-seeded New Hampshire in the America East Field Hockey Championship at Moulton Winder Field.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the fifth minute of the opening frame, the Catamounts saw a prime scoring opportunity when first-year Fiona McMahon connected with junior Alicia Battistelli on a precise cross-field pass. Battistelli corralled the ball and fired a shot toward the net, but it sailed wide as the score remained knotted at 0-0.

Sophomore Merle Vaandrager made three crucial saves throughout the first quarter as the Catamounts and Wildcats entered the second frame still scoreless.

No goals were scored in the second or third quarters, sending the match into the fourth with both teams tied at 0-0.

In the fourth quarter, the Catamounts' best chance came in the 47th minute when senior Sophia Lefranc put a low shot on goal that sophomore Abby Johnson denied.

In the first overtime, the Wildcats' best chance came in the 60th minute when sophomore Faye Meijer put a shot toward Vaandrager that went wide.Â

In the 69th minute, Meijer had another opportunity, but Vaandrager cleared the ball out of the striking circle before Meijer could corral it.

The Wildcats clinched the America East Championship when senior Tasmin Cookman cut back to the middle of the striking circle with a burst of speed and put a shot on goal that was redirected into the back of the net by senior Nicole Poulakis.
