HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountaineers opened the scoring just 3:03 into the contest. WVU caused a turnover in the midfield and broke in transition two-on-two. Marcus Caldeira played a through ball to WVU's leading scorer Yutaro Tsukada. Owen Jack came out on the play to pressure Tsukada, but he chipped the ball over the UVM keeper before slotting it home for his 11th goal of the year.
- In the 12th minute WVU's Luke McCormick found some open space in the box and Jack made a diving save at full stretch to keep it 1-0.
- In the 32nd minute Carter Johnson equalized for the Catamounts. Off a give-and-go with Daniel Pacella Johnson broke into the heart of the WVU defense. Johnson faked one way before firing a shot that deflected off a WVU defender and past Jackson Lee for his seventh goal of the season.
- Frederik Jorgensen played an in-swinging corner with his left foot that Broughton rose to head home past Vermont's Jack with 8:57 to play. It was the junior defenders second goal of the season.
- In the final four minutes of regulation Lee made two saves on Johnson, including one from point-blank range to preserve the Mountaineers first-ever home Round of 16 win.
