FINAL SCORE: UMBC 2, No. 11 Vermont 1
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Adrian Schulze Solano netted a late second-half goal, but No. 11 Vermont's (10-3-2, 3-2 AE) comeback bid fell short in a 2-1 loss to conference foe UMBC (7-3-3, 3-1-1 AE) on a soggy Saturday at Virtue Field. The loss is UVM's first on home turf this season. The matchup was Youth Day, presented by Healthy Living.

COACH'S QUOTE
"I think the lesson today is we're looking at a point in the season that every inch, every personal desire to win, you know, half plays, big plays count," head coach
Rob Dow said. "UMBC was prepared, slightly more than we were, to make those plays. Now we didn't play bad, but what separates us in this game is a clearance mistake and a free kick. It's a hard lesson to learn, but we need to learn it because we're coming to a point in the season when it's one-and-done."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Retrievers quickly grabbed a 1-0 lead when Alex Wroblewski notched his sixth goal of the season in the second minute. Taylor Calheira sent the UMBC striker on a breakaway and Wroblewski delivered a kick into the lower right corner for the go-ahead goal.
- Carter Johnson nearly broke free on a partial-breakaway in the 27th minute, but was dragged down by Jojo Ocran who was only handed a yellow card.
- The opening half remained a defensive battle with the Cats outshooting the Retrievers 3-2 before the break. UVM pressured the UMBC goal in search of the equalizer with two of its three shots directed on goal. The Catamounts recorded six corners in the frame and had opportunities, but entered the break down 1-0.
- UMBC opened the second half with another quick goal, coming on a 48th-minute free kick from Lasse Kelp. The sophomore delivered a left-footed strike into the upper left corner for the 2-0 lead.
- Nick Lockermann had a scoring chance for the Catamounts minutes later when his left-footed kick from the right of Emigdio Lopez (5 saves) was directed toward the upper left corner but was denied by the UMBC goalkeeper.
- Schulze Solano cut the UMBC lead in the 84th minute when he hammered a kick from about 25 yards out into the lower left corner. Niels Hartman and Andrew Millar were credited with assists.
- Vermont continued to pressure the UMBC defense in the final minutes, but shots from Jake Ashford and Hartman were unable to find the back of the net.
