SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS
UMass Lowell is in search of its first win since the season-opening victory over St. Francis Brooklyn (W, 2-0) in August. The River Hawks have earned ties in two straight games, including a scoreless draw against NJIT on Sept. 24 to begin league play. UML is led by head coach Kyle Zenoni who is in his first season with the program. Viljar Byrkjeland paces the attack with 10 points (4 goals, 2 assists) in eight games played, and Jonathan Ferreira (1 goal, 3 assists) and Kai McLoughlin (1 goal, 2 assists) return to UML as members of last season's All-Rookie Team. Jacob Heihsel has earned six starts in goal for the River Hawks, posting a 2.00 goals against average and 0.745 save percentage.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Vermont has a 4-2-3 mark in nine all-time meetings against UMass Lowell, dating back to 2013. The Catamounts have won four straight against the River Hawks, including their previous trip to Lowell in the 2021 spring season.
Jacob Vitale notched his first career goal to lead the Cats to a 1-0 victory at Cushing Field. Last year's victory was headlined by
Matt Black's two goal night as UVM defeated UML 3-1 on Virtue Field.
TWO-PEAT FOR MAX
Max Murray was named America East Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week. The junior registered a career-high four points, including the game-winning goal, at Siena on Wednesday (Sept. 21). Murray has a career-high 10 points this season, all coming in his last five games played.
NATIONALLY-RANKED CATS
The Catamounts were ranked No. 16 in the United Soccer Coaches National Poll on Tuesday afternoon, cracking the teens for the first time since 2005, The ranking is Vermont's highest ever by the United Soccer Coaches/NSCAA. UVM was also picked as the top team in the Northeast Region.
CATS ARE STREAKING
Vermont is riding a six-game winning streak, which is tied for the third longest streak in the country.
ROAD WARRIORS
UVM has won six straight road games dating back to last season, which is the longest active streak in the nation. The Catamounts are unbeaten in four road games in 2022, and have outscored opponents 8-1.
WINS THRU 9
UVM has seven wins through nine games for just the second time this millennium. Vermont last accomplished the feat in 2016 when it posted an 8-1 mark through the opening nine games. Prior to that, UVM had last accomplished the feat in 1992. The 2022 Catamounts are the 12th team in program history to reach seven wins through the first nine games of a season.
