Postgame: Coach Plumer
COACH'S QUOTE
"Tough end to a magical season," said Head Coach
Jim Plumer. "I need to thank the 1,500 plus fans who came out to support us and created an awesome and special atmosphere. UConn played a great game and deserves credit for not allowing us to generate a lot of offense. We hit three posts in the first period and certainly that impacted the game. The players who played their last games for us have transformed this program and we all simply didn't want it to end. We will be back next year and I hope that the fans who discovered our team this year will return to the Gut and support us."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the opening four minutes of the contest Kristina Shanahan rang a shot off the crossbar and Lilly Humphrey hit the post. Shanahan deflected a centering pass from Theresa Schafzahl off the post again with 4:55 left in the first period.
- The Huskies opened the scoring with just 1:15 left in the opening frame. Claire Peterson scored her fourth goal of the season capitalizing on a mad scramble in front of Vermont's Jessie McPherson. McPherson made two initial saves but the rebound was pounded home by Peterson. Danielle Fox and Morgan Wabick assisted on the tally.
- Wabick struck on the power play midway through the second period to double the UConn advantage. Wabick's wrist shot from the point deflected off a Vermont players shin pad and took a strange bounce before finding the back of the net. It was Wabick's 12th goal of the season.
- Vermont created consistent pressure in the third period but couldn't solve UConn first year Megan Warrener. She made 11 of her 30 saves in the third period for the Huskies.
- Jada Habisch put the game out of reach with her 13th goal of the season with 3:50 left in the contest.
- With two seconds left in regulation and the goaltender pulled Vermont's Ellice Murphy scored on a perfectly-placed wrist shot to spoil Warrener's would-be shutout. Natálie Mlýnková and Bella Parento assisted on the Murphy's fourth goal of the season.
