Men's Basketball Closes Out Regular Season Tuesday at Maine

MEN'S BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK
Vermont (24-5, 16-1 AE) closes out the regular season on Tuesday (Mar. 1) when it visits Maine (6-22, 3-14 AE) in Bangor, Maine. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Cross Insurance Arena.
 
TELEVISION & BROADCAST INFORMATION
The regular season finale will broadcast live on ESPN+. Fans can listen for free on the Vermont Sports Network, from Learfield on The Game, which will air on 97.1 FM in Burlington, 105.9 FM in Plattsburgh, and 960 AM around the rest of the region. The radio broadcast is also available via the Varsity Network App with Brian McLaughlin on the call.

SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS
Maine enters Tuesday's matchup after suffering losses in its last two games. The Black Bears' most recent loss came against UMBC (L, 93-79) on Feb. 26. Jai Steadman was appointed interim head coach on Feb. 17 and notched his first win against NJIT (W, 65-61) on Feb. 20. Maine is led in scoring by Maks Klanjscek who averages 9.9 points per game. Stephane Ingo is the Black Bears' leading rebounder with 6.3 rebounds per game.
 
INSIDE THE SERIES
Vermont owns a 79-70 all-time record against Maine, which includes 23-straight wins over the Black Bears. Ryan Davis led the Catamounts with 21 points en route to an 81-68 victory at Patrick Gym on Jan. 29.  Ben Shungu (19 points) and Justin Mazzulla (10 points) also registered double figures against Maine. Shungu scored the clinching layup with four seconds left in Vermont's last trip to Bangor, beating Maine 59-57 on Jan. 22, 2020. Cioffi Men's Basketball Head Coach John Becker is 27-1 against Maine since taking over as bench boss in 2011-12.

Ben Shungu needs 30 points to become the 42nd player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Teammate Ryan Davis achieved the milestone against UMBC on Feb. 19.

The Catamounts are tied for the best record through 29 games in program history with the 2016-17 team. With a 24-5 record through 29 games, the 2016-17 Catamounts posted a final record of 29-6, the best mark in program history.
 
16-1 IN LEAGUE PLAY
The 2021-22 Catamounts are the third team in program history to register 16 wins in conference play. Vermont last tallied 16 wins in 2016-17 when the Cats went unbeaten (16-0) in league play.

Vermont received a vote in the AP Top-25 for the third consecutive week, receiving two points on Monday (Feb. 28).
 
QUARTERFINAL TICKET INFO | Release
The Vermont men's basketball team will host an America East Quarterfinal game at Patrick Gym on Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m. As the top seed, the Catamounts will face the eighth-seeded team. America East will announce the official tournament bracket after the conclusion of the regular season on Thursday, March 3.
