#14 Women’s Hockey Travels to #6 Colgate for Big Road Test

WOMEN'S HOCKEY NOTEBOOK
After a five-point league weekend against UConn the 14th ranked Catamounts will travel to face No. 6 Colgate at Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, N.Y.  It will be Vermont's second straight weekend against a ranked opponent. Dating back to last season UVM is 2-0-1 in its last three games against ranked teams. Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday's (3 p.m.) action will air live on ESPN+.

PHF COMES TO BURLINGTON SUNDAY
The University of Vermont's Gutterson Fieldhouse will be hosting a Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) exhibition contest between the Montreal Force and the Boston Pride on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Pride are the defending Isobel Cup Champions while it will be the expansion Force's first-ever contest. Tickets are available now for just $10 at go.uvm.edu/phf. Former Catamounts Alyssa Holmes and Kristina Shanahan will be making their professional hockey debut.
 
BEECHER NAMED PRO AMBITIONS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
First year forward Lara Beecher was named Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week Monday afternoon by Hockey East. It is the Catamounts' second weekly award of the season and marks the first time in Beecher's career she has earned the honor. Beecher had a goal and two assists in Vermont's 6-1 win over UConn Saturday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse. It was Beecher's first career multi-point game and her second period tally was her first collegiate goal.
 
POWER PLAY CLICKING EARLY
Currently at a 35.7% success rate the Catamounts have the third best power play in Division I. Vermont's 10.2% shooting percentage (even strength & PP) is ranked eighth in the NCAA.
 
ALL STARTS WITH POSSESSION
The Catamounts are eighth in the NCAA and second in Hockey East winning 56.5% of their draws this season. Colgate is ranked seventh, winning 57.4% of their faceoffs. Theresa Schafzahl (77.4%) and Evelyne Blais-Savoie (63.9%) are both ranked in the top-25 individually this season at the faceoff dot.
 
LONG CHANGE, LONG PERIOD
The Catamounts have been most effective this season during the second period, when both teams have the long change. UVM has outscored its opponents 10-3 in the second and outshot teams 75-27.
 
SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Colgate is one of six teams (excluding Ivy's who have not begun) in the top-15 that are undefeated this season. The Raiders have outscored its opposition 29-3 this season in seven games played. Five of their seven games have been shutouts. No. 12 Penn State is the only team to score on Colgate this season, having fallen 3-2 and 2-1 at home to the Raiders.
 
Last weekend Colgate swept RIT at home by with a 9-0 victory and a 5-0 win. In the 5-0 win the Raiders set a new program record with 67 shots on goal. Junior forward Kristýna Kaltounková leads the team in scoring with eight goals and seven assists for 15 points. Senior Danielle Serdachny is second in scoring with six goals and eight assists for 14 points. Two of her tallies have been game-winners.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Colgate leads the overall series with Vermont 15-11-3, the teams were regular opponents in UVM's time in ECAC Division II. The teams first met on January 21, 1996 a 5-1 win for Vermont. Last season the Raiders swept a two-game set at Gutterson Fieldhouse in October with wins of 3-0 and 5-1. Under Head Coach Jim Plumer UVM is 3-3-2 against the Raiders.

CZECH-MATES EARN BRONZE
Vermont forwards Tynka Pátková & Natálie Mlynková earned bronze medals at the 2022 IIHF Women's World Championships in Denmark last month. Czechia defeated Switzerland 4-2 in the bronze medal game behind two goals from Mlynková. It was Czechia's first-ever medal on the women's side. Former Catamount Blanka Skodova was also a member of the team.
 
There were three other current Catamounts in the tournament patrolling the blueline. First year Krista Parkkonen (Finland) made her World Championships debut while Sofie Skott (Denmark) and Sini Karjalainen (Finland) competed in their second World Championship at the senior level.
 
CATAMOUNT CHALLENGE
The seventh annual Catamount Challenge kicks off this week, and runs through 1 p.m. on Friday Donations can be made at go.uvm.edu/gocats and all gifts will go to an Excellence Fund for a specific UVM sport program.
