BURLINGTON, Vt. – The UVM women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback to UAlbany in the 2021 season opener on Sunday afternoon. While the Cats start off 0-1 in conference play, the Great Danes improve to 2-3-0 overall and grab their first league win at 1-1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Great Danes broke the scoreless tie in the 19th minute with Jasmine Colbert's second goal of the season. On the edge of the 18-yard box, Colbert intercepted a pass from a UVM defender intended for goalie Lydia Kessel, worked her way into the middle of the box, and used her left foot to drill the go-ahead score into the bottom right corner of the net.
• The Catamounts had a chance for the equalizer early in the second half. Alyssa Oviedo chased down a loose ball in the middle of the 18-yard box, forcing UAlbany keeper Sophia Chen to come out the net. The two athletes met at the same time as the ball ping-ponged off one another but a Great Dane defender cleared the ball away.
• In the 64th minute, Ella Bankert came within inches of evening the score. The junior broke through two defenders and drilled a shot off the crossbar from 20 yards out but the ball bounded over the bar to eliminate any opportunity for a rebound.
• UAlbany tacked on its final goal in the 78th minute. From the left corner, Ava Hanna lofted a cross right in front of the goal. Iola Cotter and Kessel both leaped up for the ball, but Cotter managed to get enough of a deflection to knock the ball over the goal line.

• Kessel registered 11 saves in net.
• Oviedo and Frances O'Donnell paced the team with two shots apiece.
• Bankert, Fiona Doherty, Abbey Knobel also generated shot attempts for the Cats.
