COACH'S QUOTE
"I thought our guys played really hard tonight," said Cioffi Men's Basketball Head Coach John Becker. "Unfortunately, Maryland got 13 offensive rebounds late in the game, and we had a couple of good shots at the end that just kind of rimmed in and out in the final minutes. But overall, I'm really happy with the effort the guys played with tonight and the fight they had. We learn from this game and we'll get better. We're looking forward to getting home and playing a few homes games in front of our fans."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vermont came out firing in the opening seven minutes, hitting 4-of-6 shots for an early 11-4 lead. The Terrapins briefly responded, but the Catamounts continued the attack by hitting five of their next nine attempts from the floor to own a 22-13 lead at the midway point of the first half.
  • Maryland responded with a 16-6 run in the next 6:05 to take its first lead of the day. Eric Ayala and Fatts Russell tallied five points each for the Terrapins in that run, but the Catamounts closed out the half with an 8-2 run for a 36-32 lead at the break.
  • Isaiah Powell drilled a corner three 14 seconds into the second half to continue Vermont's momentum, but Maryland responded with nine unanswered points to retake the lead. The Terrapins stretched the lead out to eight points by the midway point of the second half.
  • Back-to-back three pointers by Shungu and Kam Gibson quickly pulled the Catamounts to within a basket with 8:57 left on the clock. UVM hung tight down the stretch, but Maryland rattled off 10 straight points in the closing minutes to pull away.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Shungu's career-high afternoon came on 10-of-18 shooting from the field. The guard drilled 4-of-6 attempts from deep and a trio of free throws.
  • Powell registered the first double-double of his career with 14 points and 11 rebounds.  The senior hit double figures for the second consecutive game, making 5-of-12 field goal attempts and 2-of-3 treys. Powell scooped up nine of his boards on the defensive glass.
