COACH'S QUOTE
"Very, very good win for us against an excellent UConn team," said Head Coach
Jim Plumer. "We again got strong contributions from our entire lineup.
Jessie McPherson was outstanding in net again and our team is so committed to blocking shots and playing great defense. I'm excited to see us play that way again tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vermont started strong in the opening period outshooting the Huskies 13-6. UConn's Sam Carpentier-Yelle was outstanding in net keeping the Catamounts off the board.
- The Catamounts pressure was rewarded 1:37 into the second period on their second power play of the game. Maude Poulin-Labelle scored her first goal of the season takeing a cross-ice feed from Theresa Schafzahl at the top of the slot and firing it past UConn's Carpentier-Yelle. Corinne McCool was credited with the secondary assist.
- The teams traded chances throughout the final two periods until the Catamounts were able to double their lead. With 3:07 left in regulation McCool rang a shot off the crossbar but less than a minute later Vermont put the game out of reach. Pressing in the Vermont zone UConn was caught with one defender back. On a two-on-one Kristina Shanahan fed a perfect pass to Ellice Murphy who tapped it home for her second goal of the season with just 2:19 left in regulation.
- UConn was also called for a penalty on the Murphy goal, which helped the Catamounts seal the shutout win.
