COACH'S QUOTE
"This was another missed opportunity," said head coach
Jim Plumer. "We have to get back to some basics and work towards doing the simple things better. That will be our goal heading into next weekend."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Meeting for the first time since January 2019, the Hockey East foes skated to a scoreless opening period. Providence outshot Vermont 7-3 in the first period.
- The Friars opened the scoring on Kathleen McHugh's second goal of the season at 2:49 into the second period. Whitney Dove and Ariane Julien assisted on the goal, which came on an offensive rush.
- Vermont answered before the midway point of the period when Corinne McCool deflected a shot from the point on the power play. Maude Poulin-Labelle fired the initial shot and McCool guided it into the back of the net for her sixth marker of the season. Sini Karjalainen had the secondary assist on the tying goal.
- Karjalainen gave UVM the lead with 3:05 left in the middle frame on a quick shot from the high slot that beat Clare Minnerath (19 saves). Lily Humphrey and Val Caldwell were credited with assists on the Cats' go-ahead goal.
- Providence scored twice in the third period with Hayley Lunny sparking the offense. Lauren DeBlois fired a shot wide and Lunny collected the puck off the wall and stuffed a backhanded shot past Blanka Škodová (14 saves). Lunny then assisted on the game-winner by Hjalmarsson in the final seconds of regulation.Â
