AMERICA EAST ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
Freshman forward
Rasmus Tobinski was named the unanimous 2019 America East Rookie of the Year on Monday. The Kiel, Germany native is the fifth Catamount to ever receive the honor. He has netted 10 goals in his first season – the second-most by a UVM newcomer since John Koerner scored 11 goals in 1974. He currently leads the league in shots (58), shots on goals (25) and ranks second in goals and points (22).
ALL-AMERICA EAST TEAMS
The America East Conference unveiled its All-Conference, All-Rookie and All-Academic teams on Friday. Vermont was represented by six student-athletes, including three members of the All-Conference First Team. The First Team trio was
Jon Arnar Barðdal,
Ívar Örn Árnason, and Tobinski.
Adrian Gahabka landed on the All-Conference Second Team.
Frosti Brynjólfsson and Tobinksi made the All-Rookie Team, plus
Arnar Steinn Hansson and Gahabka were selected to the All-Academic Team.
CATS IN THE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
The Catamounts are 14-14-5 all-time in the America East Tournament with a 10-6-4 record at home. UVM is 8-8-1 in the semifinal round and will play in the second round of the conference tournament for the sixth time in the last seven years. The 2019 campaign marks the seventh time that UVM has earned the No. 2 seed in the playoffs and each of the prior six trips has resulted in an America East Championship Game appearance.
SCOUTING HARTFORD
The Hawks roll into Burlington with an 11-4-4 overall record after beating Binghamton 2-0 in the America East Quarterfinal on Saturday. Hartford posted a 4-2-2 mark in conference play to earn the No. 3 seed – its highest seed since 2014 (No. 2 seed). A total of five Hawks received All-America East honors, highlighted by the trio of Jimmy Slayton, Gael Kisombe, and Rasmus Karlsson on the All-Conference Second Team. Slayton was a four-time conference Defensive Player of the Week and recorded the third-most clean sheets (9) in the country. Kisombe started each game as a defensive midfielder and Karlsson racked up nine points on three goals and three assists.
INSIDE THE PLAYOFF SERIES
The conference rivals will square off in the America East Tournament for the fifth time ever and first time since 2008. The Catamounts own a slight 2-1-1 edge as the two programs will meet in the America East Semifinal for just the second time. UVM beat Hartford 3-1 in the 2008 Quarterfinal, then won 4-2 in penalty kicks back in the 2002 Semifinal. The two previous meetings resulted in championship victories for each team. The Hawks won the 1992 title with a 2-0 victory and the Cats earned their first conference crown in 1989.
