LAST TIME OUT | Albany Highlights
The Catamounts overcame a 17-point first-half deficit and erased a double-digit disadvantage in the second half to beat Albany 72-67 on Thursday night. UVM had scoring coming from all angles as
Trae Bell-Haynes led the way with a game-high 20 points. The senior dished out five assists and grabbed four rebounds.
Drew Urquhart came close to a double-double with 19 points, eight boards, and set a new career high with five assists.
Ernie Duncan added 15 points and four rebounds while younger brother
Everett Duncan posted 10 points.
Payton Henson had a solid outing with eight points and seven boards.
AMERICA EAST 'SPREAD RESPECT' GAME
Continuing its dedication to fostering leadership on and off the court, the America East Conference and its member institutions are conducting 'Spread Respect' nights during conference basketball games. Spread Respect games were created with the purpose of furthering awareness and education to ensure equality, respect, and safety for all student-athletes and everyone in our community. Here in Catamount Country, we promote equity and inclusion by embracing all aspect of one's identity including but not limited to race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, ability or age.
DECADE OF EXCELLENCE
With the win over Albany, Vermont recorded its 10th straight season with at least 20 victories. UVM joins Gonzaga and St. Mary's (Calif.) as the only schools in the country currently with a decade of 20-win campaigns.
John Becker also became one of six active coaches with 20 wins in his first seven seasons as Division I head coach at a single school.
11 OF 11
The Catamounts are one of 11 teams in the nation with 11 or fewer losses since the start of last season.
STREAKY CLEAN
UVM will try to extend a trio of streaks on Sunday afternoon. The Cats have won 31 straight regular season conference games, the longest active regular season conference winning streak in the country. Vermont's 20-game home winning streak is the nation's second-longest streak behind only Cincinnati (39 games), and the Green and Gold own the third-longest overall winning streak at 13 games.
SCOUTING UMASS LOWELL
The River Hawks sit seventh in the conference standings with a 3-7 league record. In America East play, UMass Lowell owns the third-highest scoring offense at 72.3 points per game and have one of the top offensive threats. Jahad Thomas has dropped 21.6 points per game and has made 56.8% of his attempts against conference rivals to lead all scorers. On the defensive end, Josh Gantz has swatted away the sixth-most shots (11) versus America East teams and the redshirt junior is also tied with Thomas for sixth in the conference with 1.4 steals per game.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The all-time series with the Catamounts and River Hawks is still fresh as the two programs will square off for only the 10th time. UVM holds a 7-2 edge, but the pair of losses came at the hands of a season sweep by UML during the 2015-16 campaign. In fact, UMass Lowell's 100-93 win on Feb. 8, 2016 was the last time Vermont lost a regular season conference game. In the first meeting this year,
Ernie Duncan erupted for 32 points as the Catamounts opened America East play with an 88-77 win in Lowell.
WHO'S NEXT
Vermont will continue its four-game homestand with a visit from twin state rival New Hampshire on Thursday (Feb. 15). The opening tip is set for 7 p.m. The contest is also UVM's annual 'Rally Against Cancer' game, presented by Otter Creek Awnings and Vermont Custom Closets. The Catamounts will don pink jerseys to show support and fans are encouraged to wear pink as well.
