COACH'S QUOTE
"We've had some great play and great results over the last couple of weeks to earn our spot in the postseason," head coach
Kristi Huizenga said. "Tonight, we had trouble keeping up with the pace that was required to earn a result against a hungry UMass Lowell team. We will rest, regroup, and prepare for the playoffs."
WHO IT HAPPENED
- The River Hawks struck first in the sixth minute with Lily Fabian's fourth goal of the season. After Kristina Bartsch sent a corner kick towards the far post, the Catamounts tried to clear the threat away but Fabian tracked the ball down and lofted the go-ahead score into the right side of the net.
- UVM answered in the 18th minute with Alyssa Oviedo's second goal of the year. The Catamounts had a flurry of chances near the penalty area. Angie Salvi's close-range shot was stopped by Julia Schneider (4 saves) and Savana Yurick tried to finish the rebound but a River Hawk defender blocked the attempt. Brooke Jenkins eventually settled the ball on the left side of the box, sent a cross into the middle, and Oviedo fired a low shot through traffic into the bottom right corner.
- UML's Rachel Morrier came close to breaking the 1-1 tie late in the first half. She dribbled along the top of the box and ripped a strike that smacked off the crossbar.
- In the 72nd minute, a Casey Garfinkel corner kick found Ali Price on the right side of the box. Price lined a low shot to the far post but a UML defender cleared the scoring threat away on the goal line.
- The game-winning goal was set up by a free kick from Morrier. From 25 yards out, Morrier bent a line drive towards the center of the net but she was initially stopped by UVM goalie Kacey Lambertson (5 saves). The ball popped out of Lambertson's grasp and Joyce finished the rebound with a one-timer.
