LAST TIME OUT | UMBC Highlights
UVM redshirt senior
Payton Henson recorded his second career double-double as the Catamounts cruised to a 71-56 win over UMBC on Saturday night in the America East home opener. Henson earned his double-double on a team-high 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
Trae Bell-Haynes also reached double figures with 13 points, five boards, and three steals.
Ernie Duncan followed with an even dozen in the scoring column and the redshirt junior grabbed a pair of rebounds.
Stef Smith posted eight points while
Everett Duncan tallied seven points and gathered four offensive boards.
FASTEST COACH TO WIN NO. 150
With the win over UMBC,
John Becker became the third UVM head coach to reach 150 career victories. Becker reached the milestone in 224 games – the fastest of the three Vermont head coaches with at least 150 career wins. John 'Fuzzy' Evans accomplished the feat in 225 games while legend Tom Brennan needed 363 contests.
DUNCAN DANDY!
Ernie Duncan earned America East Co-Player of the Week honors on Monday. The Evansville, Indiana native helped the Cats to a 3-0 week while averaging 17.7 points per game. The redshirt junior shot 67.0% (16-for-24) from the field, drained 60.0% (9-for-15) of his attempts from downtown, and he was a perfect 12-for-12 at the line. Duncan is the first Catamount to receive an America East Player of the Week nod since
Cam Ward back on Feb. 22, 2016.
CHASING REGULAR NON-CONFERENCE HISTORY
The 2017-18 Catamounts have a chance to match the program record for most regular season non-conference wins since joining the America East Conference in 1979. The school mark is 10 victories by the 2016-17, 2009-10, and 2008-09 squads.
COLLEGEINSIDER.COM MID-MAJOR POLL
Vermont climbed to No. 21 in this week's
CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 Poll. The Green and Gold were one of three new teams in the power rankings after receiving votes last week.
SCOUTING DARTMOUTH
The Big Green were picked seventh in this year's Ivy League Preseason Coaches' Poll. Dartmouth has been one of the top teams in the country when it comes to protecting the ball. The Big Green have only committed 170 turnovers, the 20th-lowest total in Division I. On the offensive end, Miles Wright leads the way with a 13.2 scoring average and the senior is coming off a season-high 23 points at Harvard on Saturday. Wright has posted 18.5 points per game and has shot 59.0% (13-for-22) from the floor with five triples in the last two games. Newcomer Brendan Barry follows at 11.8 points per game and has been one of Dartmouth's top outside shooting threats. Barry ranks eighth in the Ivy league with 29 three-pointers.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Cats will try to reach the win column for the 10th straight time against their twin state rival. Despite trailing 44-58 in the all-time series, Vermont has made a valiant effort to even the head-to-head record. Since 2000, the Catamounts are 17-1 as the only defeat was a tough 76-75 loss in Hanover on Nov. 27, 2007. Last year, Henson's first career double-double guided UVM to a 73-58 victory at Patrick Gym.
