RALLY AGAINST CANCER
UVM Athletics will continue to raise awareness for cancer research through its annual Rally Against Cancer initiative, presented by Otter Creek Awnings and Vermont Custom Closets, to benefit the University of Vermont Cancer Center. In recognition of the ongoing fight against cancer, UVM will be wearing pink socks during the game. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and show their support of Vermont's cancer research initiative.
LAST TIME OUT | Niagara Highlights
The Catamounts earned their first shutout victory of the season with a 2-0 showing against Niagara last Sunday in the final contest of the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic, presented by Morgan Stanley. After jumping out to a 1-0 lead on an own goal in the first half, UVM added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute with
Geo Alves' fourth goal of the season.
Tom Cole carved the goal line and toed a low cross to Alves, who buried a one-timer into the left side of the net. The Cats landed a trio on the All-Tournament Team –
Mikel Kabala,
Daði Bærings Halldórsson, and Alves.
USC REGIONAL RANKINGS | USC East Regional Poll
Vermont climbed to No. 8 in this week's United Soccer Coaches East Regional Poll. The Catamounts were one of four new teams to crack into the top-10. UVM is also one of five America East teams in the rankings – No. 1 UMass Lowell, No. 2 New Hampshire, No. 4 Albany, No. 6 Stony Brook, and No. 9 UMBC.
NEW ENGLAND SOCCER JOURNAL POWER RANKINGS
The Green and Gold also broke into the top-10 in the New England Soccer Journal's Division I Power Rankings. The Journal ranks the Cats at No. 9 after splitting last weekend in the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic. In the Player Rankings, Alves sits at No. 7 after scoring his fourth goal of the season against the Purple Eagles on Sunday.
SCOUTING YALE
The Bulldogs roll into Burlington with back-to-back shutout victories under their belt. After dropping the season opener to Fairleigh Dickson 2-0 on Sept. 1, Yale has bounced back with a 3-0 win against Howard on Sept. 3 and later blanked in-state rival Hartford 1-0 on Wednesday. The Bulldogs own the top scoring offense in the Ivy League with 13 points on four goals and five assists, nearly double the point total of Columbia in second place. John Leisman has netted a pair of goals this season, including the eventual game-winner against Hartford. Ryan Matteo and Aldo Quevedo have also found the back of the net for the Blue and White. Kees Schipper is tied for second among Ivy keepers with a 0.66 goals-against average.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Cats and Bulldogs will tussle for the first time in two decades. UVM holds a 9-6-2 overall record against Yale with five shutout victories. The Bulldogs won the first four matches, but the Catamounts have responded with a 9-2-2 mark since 1986.
