Montréal Rallies For 2-2 Draw With Women’s Hockey

FINAL SCORE (OT): Vermont 2, Montréal 2
BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of Vermont women's hockey jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on Montréal, but the Carabins stormed back in the middle stanza to lock in a 2-2 tie in exhibition action at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Sunday.

"Other than not getting the win in the end, I feel like we got exactly what we would have wanted out of a first exhibition game," said head coach Jim Plumer. "I was very pleased with our pace and puck management and it was a great opportunity for our newcomers to get quality ice time."

In a pre-planned maneuver, each Vermont goalie saw time between the pipes. Melissa Black tallied five saves in the first period, being relieved by Sierra Natzke (11 saves) in the second stanza. Sydney Scobee entered prior to the third period and made two stops throughout the remainder of the contest. Montréal netminder Maude Trevisian played the entirety of the game and had 46 saves on the day.

Vermont was quick to grab a 1-0 advantage, doing so at the 1:43 mark of the first period. Allie Granato fed Olivia Kilberg into the offensive zone before the latter skated with the puck into the left circle. Kilberg sent a centering pass back toward Granato in the low slot that was deflected up and over the right shoulder of Trevisian.

Just over 10 minutes later, the Catamounts capitalized on a power play opportunity to double their lead. Daria O'Neill found Sammy Kolowrat for a straightaway blast that snuck through traffic in front of the net, moving the score to 2-0 at 11:54. Alyssa Gorecki received the second assist on the play.

Shortly after Kolowrat's goal, Black thwarted an attempt by the Carabins to cut UVM's lead in half. Kaleigh Quennec received a nicely timed pass in the neutral zone, setting up a breakaway opportunity. Black turned Quennec aside on the chance as well as on a subsequent attempt to jam the puck home.

Montréal ultimately used a power play of its own to get back within one in the second period. Noémie Chiasson buried a centering pass from Catherine Dubois with Annie Germain being credited the second assist.

Germain evened the score at two-apiece in the final minute of the period, going to her backhand at the edge of the crease after Dubois dished her the puck.

The Catamounts had multiple offensive opportunities in the third period, outshooting Montréal 16-2 in the span, however none would get past Trevisian. In that same stretch, Vermont peppered four shots on the power play.

In overtime, Vermont rattled off four more shots and held Montréal out of that column, but Trevisian showed more of the same to return to Québec with the tie.

The Catamounts finished the day 1-for-7 on the power play, while Montréal was 1-for-4 on the advantage.

UVM has one final preseason tune-up ahead against McGill on Friday (Sept. 29). Puck drop is slated for 6 p.m. at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
