Vermont improves to 4-2 on the season while American drops to 1-7. With the clean sheet, goalkeeper
Coco Speckmaier (10 saves) cracks into the top-10 on the program's all-time wins list (12).
The Catamounts came roaring out of the gate with a pair of strong scoring chances in the opening five minutes. In the third minute,
Sarah Martin launched a shot from inside of the 18-yard box but the senior could not get the attempt on frame. Two minutes later,
Angie Salvi drove a shot from 20 yards out but the freshman put too much behind the ball as the attempt flew too high.
In the 18th minute, Speckmaier used a diving save to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. American's Yari Bradfield received a long through ball and found herself 1-on-1 with Speckmaier, but the senior keeper made the save at point-blank range after sticking a glove up in the air.
Near the midway point of the first half, Jenkins tried to notch the first goal of the contest. The junior dribbled upfield and took a long shot from the corner of the 18-yard box, but the midfielder could not sneak the attempt under the crossbar.
Speckmaier came up with two more big saves for the Green and Gold later in the second half. In the 62nd minute, AU's Alexander Taylor took a free kick from 20 yards out and Speckmaier made a leaping save by pushing the shot over the crossbar. Three minutes later, the Eagles sent a dangerous cross in front of the net where Bradfield hit a one-timer towards the near post but Speckmaier caressed the attempt and kept American off the scoreboard.
With two minutes remaining in regulation,
Ella Bankert came within inches of giving UVM the lead. The freshman was positioned on the left side of the box and sent a low shot past the reach of American goalie Ryleigh Brown (3 saves), but the attempt rolled too wide of the far post.
In double overtime, Martin lofted a pass to the far side of the box where Jenkins lined a shot from 15 yards out for the walk-off victory.
