SWIMMING & DIVING NOTEBOOK
The Vermont swimming & diving team (2-2, 2-1 AE) hosts America East rival Maine on Saturday (Nov. 4) for a 12 p.m. dual competition at Forbush Natatorium in the squad's annual Rally Against Cancer Meet. The Catamounts will wear pink swim caps and fans are encouraged to wear pink to raise money and awareness for cancer research, with all proceeds going to the UVM Cancer Center. TOP DIVER
Haley Tomlinson was named the America East Diver of the Week on Oct. 25, earning her first career conference honor. Tomlinson had the top marks in both diving events for the Catamounts on Oct. 21 in a win over Stony Brook at Forbush Natatorium, collecting a score of 214.35 in the 1-meter dive and 226.64 in the 3-meter. The rookie then had the best scores on the team at UMass on Oct. 22 in the 1-meter (210.55) and 3-meter (225.10) diving events to earn fourth place in both behind a trio of Minutewomen, led by NCAA qualifier Emma Roush. The Maryland native was third in both events during her NCAA debut at UNH on Oct. 14.Â
LAST YEAR AGAINST MAINE
Vermont earned a 45-point conference victory over Maine last season at Stanley M. Wallace Pool by a final score of 168-123. The Catamounts won a total of eight individual events against the Black Bears, securing their fourth consecutive meet to begin the season.
Shannon Cowley won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, while
Sarah Mantz claimed two freestyle events and placed second in another. Two years ago, UVM defeated Maine 180-110 in Burlington.Â
SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS
Maine defeated Rhode Island by a score of 172-124 on Oct. 21 at Stanley M. Wallace Pool in its only dual meet to this point in the season. The Black Bears won of 10 of the 16 events on the day against the Rams as Shayla Rose Kleisingerand and Emma Blair both won a pair of individual events. Maine earned fourth place at the 2017 America East Championships with 396.5 points after placing fourth in 2016 with 448 points. Susan Lizzotte is the head coach of the Black Bears' swimming & diving program, which hasn't defeated Vermont since the 2006-07 season.Â
