MID-MAJOR POWER RANKINGS
After the strong showing in Lexington, the Catamounts remained at No. 3 in this week's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 Poll. Vermont sits behind a pair of nationally ranked programs - No. 17 Gonzaga and No. 21 Saint Mary's (Calif.).
SCOUTING NORTHERN KENTUCKY
Head coach John Brannen led the Norse to its first ever NCAA Tournament berth last season in its first season of Division I eligibility. In the Horizon League preseason picks, Northern Kentucky was tabbed second behind Oakland. Junior forward Drew McDonald was named Preseason Horizon League Player of the Year. The 6-7 big man has averaged 16.5 points through the early going of 2017-18. This season, NKU is off to a 4-0 start with a +17.0 scoring margin. The Norse took down MAAC preseason favorite Iona 85-72 on Saturday night to reach the title game.
VERMONT VS. THE TOURNAMENT FIELD
The Catamounts have faced two of the seven other teams in this weekend's tournament – Iona and James Madison. UVM is 3-5 all-time against Iona but has won three out of the last five matchups dating back to 2004. The last meeting was back on Dec. 17, 2011 when the Gaels squeaked out a 73-72 win at Patrick Gym. In the only contest against JMU, the Cats lost 82-65 back on Dec. 5, 1981.
