SETTING THE SCENE
The Catamounts will take a quick breather from conference foes to square off with a former one. UVM can claim its third straight double-digit win season, the first since the Green and Gold produced six consecutive 10-win seasons from 1986-91. Vermont's offense has been rolling during its recent three-game unbeaten streak.
Geo Alves has climbed to a 20th-place tie in Division I with nine goals and the junior leads the league in points (21), goals, and shots (54).
Justin Freitas has solidified his spot as one of the conference's top scoring threats with 15 points and six goals, both rank fourth in America East.
LAST TIME OUT |
UMBC Highlights
Freitas scored twice in the first half as Vermont topped UMBC 3-1 on Saturday night. Freitas used four minutes of the game clock to put the Catamounts out in front 1-0. UMBC answered with the equalizer in the 22nd minute when David Harris scored after receiving a long through ball from Gregg Hauck. The Catamounts responded 21 seconds later with Freitas' second goal of the evening. Mikel Kabala booted a long pass from the sideline and Freitas tracked down the feed, then lofted the go-ahead score from 25 yards out. Alves tacked on the fourth goal of the first half in the 30th minute.
Daði Bærings Halldórsson bent a long cross into the six-yard box where Alves gathered the feed and fought off a UMBC defender before finishing a low shot.
PLAYOFF BOUND!
With the victory over UMBC, the Catamounts officially clinched a spot in the upcoming America East Tournament for the eighth straight season. UVM is currently tied atop the conference standings with New Hampshire as the twin state rivals have accrued 12 points on a 4-1 league record.
ROOKIE SENSATION
First-year head coach
Rob Dow is tied for second in the nation with nine victories among Division I rookie head coaches. Dow shares second place with Radford's Bryheem Hancock and Florida International's Kevin Nylen leads the pack with 10 wins under his belt.
FIRST-YEAR SUCCESS
Dow has also made his mark in Vermont's record book during his first season at the helm. Dow's nine wins are tied with his predecessor Jesse Cormier for the second-most by a first-year UVM head coach. Paul Reinhardt set the mark by reaching the win column 11 times during his first season in Burlington.
SCOUTING NORTHEASTERN
The Huskies have struggled against non-league foes this season with a 1-6-2 record. Vermont will be the fourth America East team on the docket for Northeastern, which included a 2-1 double overtime upset of 12th-ranked UMass Lowell back on Sept. 9. Redshirt junior forward Harry Swartz leads the pack with seven points on three goals and one assist while junior defender Martin Nygaard follows with a pair of goals. Senior defender Lewis Aird has been one of the top setup men in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and sits in a fourth-place tie with four assists. Senior goalie Jonathan Thuressson has stopped the second-most shots (71) in the CAA and owns a .717 save percentage.
INSIDE THE SERIES
UVM and Northeastern will revisit the all-time series for the first time since 2004. The Catamounts hold a commanding 14-6-1 edge over their former America East counterpart. The Green and Gold will be looking to reach the win column in Boston for the first time since 2000.
