NATIONAL AND CONFERENCE STATS
Junior
Geo Alves has established himself as one of the top scorers in the conference and the country. The São Filipe, Cape Verde native leads the league in points (19) and holds a share of the America East mark with eight goals. He also ranks near the top-30 nationally in three categories – No. 20 in game-winning goals (3), No. 24 in goals, and No. 31 in points.
QUICK GLANCE AT THE STANDINGS
Vermont is tied for the top spot in the America East standings with twin state rival New Hampshire as each 'Cat program has tallied nine points with a 3-1 league mark. UMBC trails closely behind in third place with a 2-1-1 conference record and seven points.
REGIONAL RANKINGS
The Catamounts climbed back into the top-10 in this week's United Soccer Coaches' East Regional Poll. UVM sits at No. 10 while the Retrievers stand at No. 6 in the poll. In the New England Soccer Journal's Power Rankings, UVM moved up three spots to No. 6 and ranks second among America East schools (No. 1, New Hampshire).
LAST TIME OUT |
UMass Lowell Highlights
The junior trio of
Justin Freitas,
Mikel Kabala,
Jon Arnar Barðdal tracked down a pass on the sideline near UVM's bench and sent a pass towards the box for Freitas, who dished a cross into the six-yard box. Alves finished the attack with a one-timer inside of the near post.
AMERICA EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Alves was named America East Player of the Week on Monday for the second time this season. He scored two goals in a pair of UVM victories last week. In a 2-1 win at Stony Brook, the 5-8 forward netted the first goal of the contest in the 41st minute. He notched the decisive goal in the 51st minute as the Green and Gold topped UMass Lowell.
SCOUTING UMBC
UMBC comes into the weekend with only one loss in its last six matches, including a 1-1 draw with top-ranked Maryland on Sept. 26. The Retrievers own the second-highest scoring offense in America East with 68 points (23 goals, 22 assists). The Black and Gold have three players leading the way with four goals apiece – senior midfielders Gregg Hauck and Sammy Kahsai along with junior defender Kyle Saunderson. Freshman goalie Ciaran O'Loughlin possesses the third-lowest goals-against average in the league at 1.05 with a pair of clean sheets.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Cats have won the last three matches on their way to a 7-4-1 advantage against the Retrievers. In 2015, UVM knocked off three-time defending champion UMBC 2-1 in the America East Semifinal at Virtue Field on its way to an America East Championship. Last year, the Catamounts blanked the Retrievers 3-0 in Baltimore for their largest margin of victory on the road in the all-time series.
