SETTING THE SCENE
The Catamounts will look to carry their recent momentum into Tuesday. UVM has won five out of its last seven matches and the Cats are one of four America East teams (Albany, UMBC, UNH) with at least six victories. The Green and Gold possess the fourth-highest scoring offense in the league at 43 points on 16 goals and 11 assists.
Geo Alves is the top point scorer in the conference with 15 points. His six goals are tied for the most in America East and he sits in a fifth-place tie with three assists.
Tom Cole has matched Alves with three assists and
Justin Freitas ranks 10th among the league's top assist leaders.
LAST TIME OUT
UVM sophomore
Ívar Örn Árnason found the back of the net with a header in the final minute and handed Vermont a 1-0 victory at Hartford on Saturday night in the conference opener. As the clock ticked down to the 90th minute, the Catamounts were presented with a free kick from about 40 yards out. Alves launched a ball into the box where Árnason leaped above the Hawks' defense and placed the game-winner into the top left corner of the net.
ÁRNASON IN THE ARSENAL
Árnason scored his first two collegiate goals last week in a pair of UVM victories and his efforts were rewarded with America East Co-Player of the Week honors on Monday. Last Tuesday, he helped the Catamounts secure a 2-0 victory at Harvard, their first since 2002, with an insurance goal in the 71st minute.
ROAD TRIP RECAP
The Cats will cap off their longest regular season road trip in program history on Tuesday afternoon. UVM is 3-2 during the five-game stretch so far with wins at UC Riverside, Harvard, and Hartford. The voyage has covered four states (California, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Connecticut) along with three different conferences (Big West, Ivy League, America East).
FIRST-YEAR COACHING SUCCESS
Rob Dow has tied Robert Stone for the fourth-most victories (6) by a UVM first-year head coach. Dow is also tied for the nation's lead in victories among Division I rookie head coaches. Paul Reinhardt set the benchmark with 11 wins during his first season in Burlington back in 1975.
SCOUTING UMASS
The Minutemen have an active four-game unbeaten streak intact – the third longest streak in the Atlantic-10. UMass ranks second in the A-10 in assists (16) and the group is tied for third in the conference with 16 goals. Freshman midfielder Davis Smith has been on fire of late with three goals in the last two games. The local Amherst product leads the pack with 26 shots and holds a share of the team lead with four goals. Senior forward Alex DeSantis has used a balanced attack with four goals and three assists. DeSantis sits in a fourth-place tie among top A-10 scorers. Redshirt senior goalie Bardia Asefnia owns the fourth-lowest goals-against average among A-10 keepers at 0.86 and he is tied for third with three shutouts.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The regional rivals will meet for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons. UVM holds a commanding 21-9-6 all-time edge and has reached the win column in four out of the past five matches against UMass. Since 1986, the Green and Gold are 9-2-4 versus their A-10 foe and have recorded seven clean sheets. Last year, the Catamounts held off the Minutemen 3-2 at Virtue Field as all five goals came in the first half.
