BURLINGTON, Vt. – Meredith Gurnee scored her second goal of the season in the 55th minute to defeat Vermont 1-0 Tuesday night at Virtue Field in a defensive battle between the intrastate rivals.

After a scoreless first half the Catamounts got a quality chance in the 51st minute.

Nikki McFarland worked a give and go that released McFarland in the box. Amidst some traffic McFarland fired a hard low shot that was parried away by the Big Green's Casey Cousineau.
Minutes later Gurnee scored the eventual game-winner after receiving a pass at midfield. Gurnee dribbled into space pulling just ahead of a Vermont defender before firing a shot off the post and in past the Catamounts
Coco Speckmaier (7 Saves). Gurnee's fifth career game-winning goal was also her third career marker against Vermont.
The Catamounts best chance at an equalizer came in the 89th minute off a free kick from just past midfield.
Sarah Martin fired a shot from distance that Cousineau just corralled as it headed for the upper left corner. Cousineau made seven saves as she collected her fifth clean sheet of the season.
Vermont closed out its non-conference schedule this evening with a record of 5-3-1. The five non-conference wins are the most by UVM since 2004.
The Catamounts return to action on Sunday, September 25 at 1 p.m. as they begin America East play with a league contest at Maine.
