BERKELEY, Calif. – A second half comeback effort by the Vermont women's lacrosse team fell short at California on Friday. The Golden Bears posted an 18-13 victory over the Catamounts in UVM's final game of a West Coast swing.

Lizz Lavie led all scorers with five goals and Elizabeth Pellechi added five points to lead California. Â Chloe Landry collected a team-high five draws and the Golden Bears held a 22-12 advantage in draws in the contest.

Alison Bolt led Vermont with six points and a team-high four asists, while
Alex Bernier chipped in five points.
Vanessa VanderZalm added three points, four ground balls and three draws.

California jumped out to a 3-0 lead, including a pair of goals from Lavie, to start the game. The Catamounts climbed back to within one after back-to-back tallies from
Meredith Moore and VanderZalm.

The Golden Bears added three more goals to push their lead to 6-2 with 7:10 remaining in the half. Bernier snapped the rally with her seventh goal of the season for Vermont. However, Cal rattled off four of the next five goals to take a 10-4 lead into the break.

California stretched its lead to eight with a pair of goals to open the second half. The Catamounts scored four of the next six goals to climb back within four with 16:35 remaining in the game.

The Golden Bears added a pair of unassisted tallies to push the lead back to eight, but the Catamounts rallied again.

Vermont scored four straight goals off the stick of four different players to slice the lead back to four, 16-12, with 6:51 left, but Cal kept UVM at arms length, scoring twice in the final five minutes to pick up the win.

Jenny Wilkens was credited with eight saves for California, while
Maddy Kuras and
Catherine Green combined to make four stops in the Vermont net.

California improves to 2-3 overall, while Vermont falls to 1-5 on the season. The Catamounts return to action on Wednesday (March 16). UVM closes out a five-game road swing at Quinnipiac. Game time is set for 3 p.m. in Hamden, Connecticut.
