KILLER B'S STRIKE AGAIN
The dynamic duo of
Bernard Yeboah and
Brian Wright scored both of UVM's goals in last Saturday's 2-1 double overtime win against Binghamton in the quarterfinal round. Yeboah guided Vermont to a comeback with the equalizer in the 87th minute and then Wright gave the Catamounts a walk-off win in the 109th minute. The duo ranks as two of the top scorers in the nation this year. Wright is tied for third in the country with nine assists and sits fifth with 32 points. Yeboah follows with 26 points – good enough for a 15th place tie in Division I. The pair also became the first set of teammates to record at least 25 points in the same season. In the career record book, Wright and Yeboah have combined for 144 total career points – the most in program history by two Catamount classmates.
TWO YEARS OF DOMINANCE
UVM has amassed 24 wins over the past two seasons. The Catamounts have enjoyed their most successful two-year run in nearly three decades as only the 1989-90 seasons produced more with 29 victories. Vermont has also won more games during the two-year stretch than another other America East program. New Hampshire is the closest with 22 wins while UMass Lowell and Albany trail with 20 victories.
NSCAA REGIONAL RANKINGS
The semifinal matchup will feature two of the top teams in the region. The National Soccer Coaches of America Association (NSCAA) East Regional Poll ranked the Catamounts as the fifth-best team in the East region and moved up two spots from last week's poll. Albany sits three spots ahead of Vermont at No. 2 in the region, an improvement from the No. 3 slot a week ago.
UVM TOURNEY HISTORY
The Catamounts will be playing in their fourth semifinal matchup in the last five seasons. Wednesday night's primetime outing will be the first time that the two squads have met in the tournament's semifinal round. The last time the two teams squared off in the postseason was in 2014 as fifth-seeded UVM pulled off a 2-1 upset over fifth-seeded Albany in the America East quarterfinals.
CHASE FOR WIN NO. 115
Jesse Cormier is only two wins away from breaking Ron McEachen's record of 114 program wins. The Catamounts won their final three regular season games and last Saturday's comeback win over Binghamton gave Cormier his 113th career win.
SCOUTING ALBANY
The Great Danes finished the regular season with a 10-5-2 record and 4-2-1 in America East play to earn the No. 2 seed. Albany capped off the 10-win season with seven wins in their last 10 games (7-2-1), including a stunning 2-1 upset over Syracuse on October 4. The Orange were ranked No. 3 in the country at the time.
The Great Danes were the top scoring offense in league play with 44 points and averaged a conference-best 2.00 goals per game, highlighted by five America East All-Conference and All-Rookie Team selections. Keith Traught, an All-Conference First Team selection, helped anchor Albany's backline which only allowed seven goals in their last 10 games. Goalie Danny Vitiello was one of the top keepers in the conference with a share of the league-lead in shutouts (3) and ranked third in saves (21). On the offensive end, Nico Solabarrieta tallied 12 points in America East play and was tied for the conference lead with five goals at regular season's end.
SERIES HISTORY
In the regular season, Albany was one of only two teams on the docket to hold Vermont scoreless. Vermont lost the conference road opener 4-0 on October 7 at Casey Stadium. Prior to the shutout loss in the regular season, UVM had fared well at Albany with only two road losses since 2002 (4-2-1). From 2002-05, the Catamounts had their best run with five straight games without a loss (4-0-1) and only allowed one goal during the stretch.
AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONSHIP
If Vermont can pull off the upset and advance to the America East Championship, then the Catamounts will be playing on Sunday (Nov. 13). If fifth-seeded Hartford can upset top-seeded Stony Brook on Wednesday, then Vermont will host the championship game. If Stony Brook wins, then UVM will make the trip to Long Island. Visit
