FIRST ROUND RECAP | Rider Highlights
Vermont senior
Brian Wright set the program record for most points in a single season (39) with a hat trick and also recorded an assist in Thursday night's 4-1 victory over Rider in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. UVM won its fourth NCAA Tournament game all-time and advances to the second round for the third time overall, its first since 2007. Wright's point total currently ranks second in the country. Among the top statistical teams in the country, the Cats sit third in shots on goal per game, have registered the sixth-most goals and points, and hold the eighth-best scoring offense.
HISTORICAL NIGHT
UVM's victory against Rider inked its spot in the program's record book as arguably one of the most significant games in program history. In front of a record crowd of 2,058 fans at Virtue Field, the Catamounts improved to 14-6-1 overall and became only the second team all-time with 14 or more victories in a season. Thursday's first round matchup was the first home NCAA Tournament game for Vermont since 1989 and also the second overall home victory in the tournament for UVM. In addition to breaking the single-season points record, Wright joined the program's all-time leading scorer John Koerner as the only Catamounts to score at least 100 career points.
CHASE FOR WIN NO. 115
With Thursday night's win, head coach
Jesse Cormier tied Ron McEachen's record of 114 program wins. Vermont is playing in its third NCAA Tournament under Cormier since 2007.
CATS HISTORY IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
The Catamounts will be making their third trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Vermont beat Yale in 1989 with a 1-0 overtime victory at Centennial Field. UVM saw a familiar tournament rival in 2007 with UConn. The Cats and Huskies met in the second round of the tournament for the fourth time, but the Huskies avenged a 1989 loss to Vermont with a 2-0 win in Storrs, Conn.
SCOUTING VIRGINIA
Virginia is yet to lose on its home turf with an 8-0-4 record at Klöckner Stadium this season. The Cavaliers finished the regular season on a nine-game unbeaten streak (6-0-3) and earned the No. 6 seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament. After knocking off North Carolina State in the first round with a 1-0 victory, Virginia suffered a 1-0 loss to nationally-ranked and No. 3 seed Louisville. The Cardinals were also the last team to beat the Cavaliers before the 10-game stretch began on September 24. A total of seven UVA players earned All-ACC honors, highlighted by All-Conference Second Team selection Pablo Aguilar. The redshirt junior has scored six goals and recorded 14 points this year, which are both tied for the team lead. Edward Opoku joins Aguilar on the scoring front with 14 points and six goals. Opoku has tallied a total of five game-winning goals which sits 11th in the country. Keeper Jeff Caldwell became the third UVA goalie to earn a pair All-ACC selections in a career and the first since 1989. Caldwell has the 27th-best save percentage (.812) among Division I netminders and the junior recorded the seventh-most shutouts (9) in Virginia single-season history.
ACC SERIES HISTORY
The second round matchup will mark the first-ever meeting between the Catamounts and the Cavaliers. UVM holds a 7-7-5 record against current members of the ACC. The last time Vermont faced an ACC opponent was in the first round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament versus Boston College where the Eagles handed the Cats a 1-0 loss after scoring in the 71st minute.
