Box Score
The Catamounts improve to 11-5-1 overall and even their conference record at 3-3-0. The 2016 squad becomes the seventh team in program history to record an 11-win season. UMBC drops to 5-8-0 overall and 0-6-0 in America East.
Vermont had a successful night shooting the ball as 12 of the team's nine shots landed on goal.
"Quite a night for the team. We talked about the ability of our guys to overcome their high energy, early fight and to settle and find ways to win the game. The guys did that tonight, a special performance by Brian upfront, with a tremendous supporting cast from
Bernard Yeboah,
Stefan Lamanna,
Jon Arnar Barðdal, and
Shane Haley among others. To get two clean sheets on the road also signifies great work for our defense lead by
Arnar Steinn Hansson,
Eamon Kitson,
Aron Runarsson (2 saves), and
Arthur Bacquet. We always felt winning the center of the midfield was key and
Charlie DeFeo and
Mikel Kabala won many of those key skirmishes. All and all, a great team road performance and our second in a row," head coach
Jesse Cormier stated about his team after the win. Cormier inches closer to the all-time wins record with tonight's victory. He has 111 career wins under his belt at UVM and only needs four more wins to break Ron McEachen's record of 114 career wins.
Wright recorded his eighth goal of the season in the 15th minute. UMBC goalie Billy Heavner (6 saves) booted a goal kick to midfield where Barödal was there to trap and center it. Barödal chipped a ball back into the UVM's offensive third of the field. As Barodal made the pass, Wright sprinted forward and was the first track the ball down. After the ball took one bounce, Wright headed in the first goal of the contest.
Wright's score stood at halftime as a total of only nine shots were attempted in the opening half with six of the nine shots coming from the cleat of a Catamount.
In the 80th minute, Wright used his speed one more time to score his ninth goal of the season. Defeo dished a long pass to Wright, who outsprinted the Retrievers' defense in the far corner of the box and then lined a low shot into the bottom left corner of the net to double UVM's lead to 2-0.
UVM struck again two minutes later when Lamanna padded the lead to 3-0. Haley passed a long ball downfield to set up the scoring opportunity. Lamanna worked his way through the UMBC defense to tally the final goal of the contest for UVM.
Vermont returns home on Wednesday (Nov. 2) to host New Hampshire at 7 p.m. in the final regular season game of the year. UVM will honor its 11 seniors before the game for Senior Night. Free live video is available in HD via AmericaEast.TV.
