FAMILIAR FOEHead coach
Jesse Cormier will face his old club when Vermont takes on Oregon State in the opening game of the Nike Portland Classic. Cormier served as an assistant coach and associate head coach for the Beavers before coming to UVM. He was part of Oregon State's most successful three-year run in school history, which included the program's first-ever NCAA College Cup appearance.
Â
ABOUT OREGEON STATEThe Beavers are ranked No. 21 in the country in the latest NSCAA National Poll released on Sept. 1. Oregon State opened the year with a pair of wins, pulling out a 1-0 overtime victory against Marquette and adding a 1-0 win over No. 9 Michigan State. Mikhail Doholis, Jalen Markey, Timmy Mueller and Nolan Wirth were all named to the Henson/Zaher Classic All-Tournament Team. Doholis was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week on Tuesday for his efforts in the two wins. He netted the game-winning goal against Marquette and picked up the assist on the game-winner against Michigan State. Oregon State went 12-8-1 last season and welcomes 14 newcomers to the mix in 2015. Mueller, who had the game-winning goal against the Spartans, is the team's top returning scorer. He posted 24 points on 11 goals and two assists a year ago. The Beavers were picked to finish fifth in the six-team Pac-12 Preseason Poll. Friday will mark the first meeting between the two teams.
Â
ABOUT PORTLANDThe Pilots stand at 0-2 on the season after competing in Oregon State's Henson/Zaher Classic last weekend. Portland fell 1-0 to No. 9 Michigan State and dropped a 4-2 decision to Marquette. The Pilots boast just two true seniors (17 letterwinners) on the squad and have added 10 newcomers to the team. Junior Eddie Sanchez is the team's leading scorer from a year ago and an All-WCC Frist Team selection. Sanchez tallied five goals and added three assists last season despite missing six matches with an injury. Defender Hugo Rhoads also earned all-league honors last year. Both Sanchez and Rhoads were selected to the All-WCC Preseason Team and Portland was picked to finish seventh in the WCC Preseason Poll. Sunday will mark the second meeting between the two teams, they last met in 2009 in Burlington when the Pilots played in what is now the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic. UVM and Portland played to a 1-1 draw in that lone meeting.
