Jessica Roach scored a career-high seven goals as Vermont cruised to a 15-7 victory over Quinnipiac in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Virtue Field on Wednesday. Vermont improved to 4-3 following the victory, while Quinnipiac dropped to 0-6 overall.
Roach posted an eight-point performance with seven goals and one assist, as she registered her fifth multi-goal performance of the year. The senior moved into fourth place on UVM's all-time points list with 162 in her career.
Vanessa VanderZalm notched four points on a pair of goals and assists, and
Alison Bolt and
Elena McWright tallied two goals apiece to help pace UVM. The multi-goal game from McWright was the first of her career.
Kyra Ochwat led the charge for Quinnipiac with three scores, and Kathleen DeVito chipped in with a pair of goals on the afternoon.
Meg Hopkins stopped a pair of shots to earn her fourth win of the season in net, and
Mackenzie Maher and
Rosie Gluck also saw time in goal for Vermont. The appearance for Gluck was the first of her Catamount career.
Samantha Tilts and Kyle Larkin split time in goal for Quinnipiac, combining for nine saves in the contest.
Vermont opened the game with the first five goals in a span of under eight minutes. Roach tallied a pair of the scores and added an assist during the early Catamount run that put the team out in front, 5-0.
Kelly Babstock put an end to the Vermont run with Quinnipiac's first goal of the game at the 21:08 mark, but Vermont outscored the Bobcats 5-1 in the final 15 minutes of the period to take a 10-2 lead into halftime. Roach registered two more goals before half, and Bolt added her second of the game to give Vermont the wide margin at the break.
The Catamounts led 12-4 at the 19:26 mark of the second period before they rattled off three straight scores, including a pair of goals from Roach and one from
Emma Tizard, to extend their lead to 15-4.
Quinnipiac was able to tally the final three goals of the contest, but eventually fell by a final of 15-7, as Vermont collected its fourth victory of the year.
UVM outshot Quinnipiac by a 34-14 margin, and also held advantages in both ground balls (30-15) and draw controls (14-10).
Head coach
Jen Johnson collected her 76
th win at the helm of the Catamounts, which tied John Carter for the most wins by a head coach in program history. Johnson has guided the Catamounts to at least seven wins in each of the past four seasons, including a program-high 12 victories last year.
UVM hits the road to battle Sacred Heart on Saturday (March 14) at 12 p.m.
